6 Reasons It’s Always a Mistake to Think of Yourself as a Victim

Sociologists Bradley Campbell and Jason Manning came up with a useful way of explaining how America’s culture has changed over the decades. Essentially, they believe we initially changed from a culture that revolved around honor to one that revolved around dignity. Now, we’re in the process of becoming a victim-centered culture. Here’s a short, but sweet explainer of the differences.

  1. OMG! I was so insulted by that CIS white garbage! I did not have a choice in my birth, but if I had, I would have chosen POC parents, because white people can never understand what it is like being white and not liking watermelon, tacos, and whatever Asian-Americans eat.

  2. Note from Doctor Bogside: "The only thing you're ever a victim of is your own stupidity".

  3. I personally also suspect that it’s an extension of the lazy-thinking epidemic in the US. It’s a shit-ton less work to attach a negative blanket label to a group and blame them than it is to have self-accountability. The saddest part is that they’re never put upon to explain why they attached the label to begin with. Two reasons why they fear that: #1 - busted for being fully shit and #2. - lord, the mental effort it would take to formulate an explanation. Attaching an “ism” is so much less labor-intensive, especially when you didn’t even have to be the one to attach it to begin with. Just glug the koolaid and start bitching.
