Maybe they should bring back "Tell Tales". When I was a kid the West Shore RR ran freight between Brewster NY and Weehawkin NJ. There was a bridge over the tracks in my town. I wondered what that multiple ropes hanging about 75 yards before the bridge was for. The local station master told me it was called a "Tell Tale" to warn RR personel who might be standing on the top of a car to drop before he smacked the bridge.
I''m going to guess he did not contribute a whole lot to society overall , and probably would have been killed in some other stupid manner way before he developed a cure for cancer or found a way to beat world hunger .
Eh...its water under the bridge at this point.
