Using cannabis no better than placebo for treating pain, study shows

SOLNA, Sweden — Marijuana appears to have the same pain-relieving effect as a placebo — or fake pill. However, researchers say media outlets continue to cover these medical trials about cannabis-based therapies positively, regardless of the outcomes.

I know everybody's different, but marijuana has always intensified my pain, especially with headaches and bone injuries.
Headaches were the worst though. If I had one of those little nagging headaches and fired up a joint, within 5 minutes I would feel like somebody whacked me in the head with a baseball bat.
The only thing weed has ever helped me with was nausea. That's it. Even then it was marginal - after a few tokes I could eat and hold my food down, but just barely. It never actually cured my nausea, just eased it a bit.

  1. I have Crohn's. Been dealing with it for fifty years before they even knew what it was. Found out in the 70s that weed really helped with the constant twisting in my gut. Not the pain, but I'm used to that. It helped with the intestinal spasms.

  2. Your stomach is a muscle and it relaxes you and your muscles. Helps with cramps too.

  3. I've been a chronic user since age 16. Daily even now 46 yrs later. I have a medical card because its cheaper overall where I am. The whole medical aspect, given my extensive experience, is mostly BS. I'm not saying folks don't get more from it than I but for me, it simply levels me out so I can function (mentally). As for physical pain, I do not find any strains give obvious relief. YRMV

  4. I was a mate on a drift fishing boat and if it was going to be rough, I would take a few hits to make sure I wouldn't get seasick. Also, it helped my mom with nausea from chemo....

  5. That is precisely my response to it. Worsens pain big time. Even if I'm not in pain, it only ever makes me paranoid and loopy with psychedelic lights and colors playing in my head, worried I'm going to forget to breathe, a miserable wreck right up until it puts out my lights. It would be perfect for my insomnia, IF it did not make me so miserable for the hour before it knocks me out.

  9. It worked on my aches and pains, figured that out early on, working in the ship yards and tree service. For me it worked immediately, for up to an hour, no more. That gave the ibuprofen time to kick in. It also lowered my blood pressure too, immediately. Everyone is different, of course ymmv. Tree Mike

  10. With type ll, neuropathy and 73, I get serious leg pain at night before bedtime. I take a couple hits and the pain is gone. Its that simple for relief. Medical dope is 1/5 the strength in Florida as it is in Mo. so we're forced to buy off the economy.

  11. My oldest brother and I both get migraines. His nickname has been Weedhopper, since high school. He has used weed to control his migraines for years, but he smokes nearly daily.
Here in Michigan, they have had medical weed for a long time, and recreational for a couple of years. I tried the medical type, with the card, on 2 different occasions. Not only did I not get any help, I never could get a buzz from it, even using it with my brother sitting with me, showing me how, either in brownies, a vaporizer, a joint, nothing.
The only thing that really helps is a strong narcotic, and something to stop vomiting. Of course, they don't believe in using that now, so I mostly just suffer.
Here in Michigan though, the marijuana shops are doing really well.

  12. I don't know about for pain, but I take a 5mg gummy at night for RLS. Not a perfect solution, but it helps a lot. Sometimes almost too well, instead of having a hard time falling & staying asleep it's a hard time waking up.

  13. Buddy and I would take his truck over to Wirt County to hunt. His Ford had rotted out floor boards, bad exhaust and a leaking transmission, plus, the road over is just a cork screw. I would about die from the fumes and motion sickness before we got half way. If we smoked some weed on the way we could tolerate the ride a bit better.

  14. These are worthless studies with an agenda. Most pain management comes from CDB which lowers the anxiety associated with pain, the THC can relax one and make pain easier to live with. They never test with any of the terpenes that exist, which is why most nutritional and natural medicine studies are bunk - they do not tell you anything in a reductionist model, because they are system components. As wirecutter noticed, THC is pretty good at making people more aware of how their body is feeling, so this can have different affects. For me it helps me sleep because it helps me feel the tiredness that exists. It doesn't put me to sleep if I am rested and alert.

  15. I'm glad to see other people say it worsens their pain because that's always been my experience. Makes me feel unable to complete a sentence too. My son has found that it is about the only thing that helps him with his adhd symptoms. He says it levels him out and makes him feel so much more functional than anything he took via prescription. I do believe it has real effect on some things but the way it is hyped as a miracle cure for everything is ridiculous.

  16. Smokin dope makes you stupid. I don't care how "smart" you are, we'd all be smarter if we didn't smoke weed.

    1. I have always been a strident opponent of marijuana after seeing what constant use did to friends and family.
      However...
My wife has been disabled with a neurological spine disease for over 24 years.
This has meant a daily regimine of multiple narcotics and nerve inhibitors.
      Let me re-state that: Daily...for TWENTY-FOUR YEARS.

A few years ago a friend, whos wife has MS, suggested that my wife try CBD products.
I was doubtful, but the narcotics were losing their effectiveness; and the state legislature demanded that all pain management doctors cut their prescriptions to meet some arbitrary level (A level decided by politicians, NOT the doctors in question.).
We began using a CBD cream/ointment when the pain became too much.
Imagine our surprise when the ointment worked within a minute or so and the wife stated that she hasn't had that amount of relief in years!!
Would now heartily recommend CBD products!!

      Sidenote:
Wife did try weed early on in her disability and it did nothing but make her anxious and sleepy.
No pain relief and she would have run afoul of Fed rules regarding her narcotics prescriptions.
(Gotta love the government. They're here to HELP!!)

  17. My son has intense migraines. Doctor offered a weed prescription for it. Son laughed at the idea. When he is around people who use, their odor alone gives him a migraine.

  19. Studies show if I say studies show....

THC/CBD is effective for many things - too bad people are too stupid to read beyond the headlines & understand where the truth lays.

Nothing cures everything. But dayum, for seizures MS, tremors - it's like a miracle drug
