Because 'equality' and all that

Connecticut Democrats are working to lower the physical fitness requirements for female firefighters, saying that less onerous standards will make fire departments "more diverse."

A law introduced earlier this month in the Connecticut State Assembly would let women skip the Candidate Physical Ability Test, a timed gauntlet used by fire departments across the country. The test, which only 10 to 15 percent of women pass, requires candidates to complete intense physical tasks while wearing a 50 pound vest. It’s designed to simulate the experience of navigating a fire in heavy gear—and to weed out those unable to do so.

  1. As a Kommiecticut FF/EMT I give you my $0.02

It is not about equality. Females are already accepted in the fire service and have "equal opportunity" to get hired if they pass all the tests, especially the CPAT. It is "equity" (equal outcome, not opportunity) they are pushing as a solution to a non-problem, except to some SJW that thinks the numbers of females need to be higher, FF safety be damned.

As it happens, the loudest outcry against this is coming from Kommiecticut female FF's already on the job, because they are there and fully qualified just like the guys. They don't want to bet their life on these halflings that can't perform. Nor do us guys.

  2. Morons! This places the public and fellow firefighters in danger. Women are not as strong as men. The physical aspect of the firefighters exam tests bona fide job requirements as does the written part of the exam. Three guys on a 3" hose can hold the hose while directing it on the fire. Three women will get thrown back and the hose will whip under its pressure. Also, carrying an unconscious person down a ladder or even out a door cannot be done if you cannot pass the exam.

Even the federal discrimination standards realize this, and allow merit based selection even if it has a discriminatory effect where the measure of merit is a bone fide job requirement.

  4. So what part of endangering yourself and everybody around you, do these idiots not understand? I've turned down jobs because I'm not tall enough to do the job. I've got the upper-body strength but not the height and that was back in the mid-70s when the whole equality thing was kicking off in the work place.

  5. I have never seen diversity improve anything. I have been exposed to two companies that initiated diversity programs. Both went under in just a couple of years. When unqualified people are put in positions because of their sex or ethnic background they are going to fail.

      That's why we vote.

    2. Remember what Trump said, "Everything woke turns to shit!"

I purposely blew a job interview with FEDEX when it got to the diversity portion, because I refused to lie and say I would put together a special team for a project based on attributes other than qualified to perform successfully. As I walked out I told them if they want someone to keep their facility in operation, I was their guy. If they want someone to play the diversity game, find someone else. Apparently diversity was more important than abilities. Fuck 'em I say.

  6. Not enough female firefighters dying on the job?
Let's hire more weaklings, for 'equity'.

  7. So there is a fire and someone needs to be dragged out. Does the female firefighter bat her eyes at the guy next to her and say "could you drag this person out for me".

Obama was trying his damnest to get rid of written requirements for promotions in the military. I think he did succeed in some areas so they were based on oral tests. Minorities could not read.

My brother was in Texas department public safety (state cop) when democrat Ann Richards became governor. Every thing went to shit. He had a dps graduate show up for graduation with his shoes untied and without his gun. Texas has not recovered from Ann Richards. All promotions were based on being minority.

    1. Republicans have been fully in charge for a quarter century, yet dems still choose the Speaker, and get choice chairmanships. Voting R in Texas has been nearly as bad as Ds, and I'll argue in some ways worse.

  8. As a Journeyman Mechanic of over thirty-five years, I can honestly state diversity is having a detrimental effect everywhere. The worst part about it is I have tried to weed out the lesser individuals and have been punished for it, while at the same time being accused of withholding information and "failing to instruct" younger techs - my reasoning certain techs are not yet at a skill level where they are capable of absorbing such a degree of instruction has fallen on deaf ears.
I have personally seen techs "fast-tracked" through the system in order for the schools to claim they are producing "Journeypersons" at the same rate the industry needs them to fill positions. While this is unfair to the end customer due to unnecessary repairs and billing, it is also unfair to the other techs who actually have put in the effort to develop skills - it also leaves many of the "diverse" hires with a skewed view of the Trade.
Don't get me wrong, I have been pleasantly surprised by a few diamonds in the rough. Interestingly, it is only a short while before they begin to adopt the same worldview as others and myself - one even expressed sincere gratitude for the opportunity afforded.

Unfortunately, that was one-off. I wish I was wrong.

    1. In my day I could say "pack your tools and scram" (nice version) and they would. Way way back.
      Glad to be retired.

  9. So to make us more diverse, you must first make us less safe. GOT IT!

  10. When the disability claims spike, then what? Will the underwriters increase premiums? Count on it.
Will insurers refuse business with the state of CT? Doubtful.

So, there is another way the citizenry pay more for less.

It would be very interesting to track disability claims by demographic (start with female FF/PD).

    1. That’s what I was going to ask Glypto - the first comment.
My dept. had a BUNCH of female hires.
A couple were legit olympic/pro athletes…in their 20’s. Add on 5-7 years and a couple pounds or a couple kids and that former athlete became a liability.
They get hurt, go on permanent industrial and push a pencil for the next 15 yrs. Then, get this, THEY FUCKING PROMOTE the Industrial Queens and their pension grows and grows.
I’m so fucking glad I retired and don’t have to watch that bullshit anymore
