Happy Birthday to General Robert E. Lee

Born to Revolutionary War hero Henry "Light-Horse Harry" Lee in Stratford Hall, Virginia, Robert Edward Lee seemed destined for military greatness. Despite financial hardship that caused his father to depart to the West Indies, young Robert secured an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he graduated second in the class of 1829. Two years later, he married Mary Anna Randolph Custis, a descendant of George Washington's adopted son, John Parke Custis. Yet with all his military pedigree, Lee had not set foot on a battlefield. Instead, he served seventeen years as an officer in the Corps of Engineers, supervising and inspecting the construction of the nation's coastal defenses. Service during the 1846 war with Mexico, however, changed that. As a member of General Winfield Scott's staff, Lee distinguished himself, earning three brevets for gallantry, and emerging from the conflict with the rank of colonel.

  3. Apologies to the General from 21st century America.
One of the points of reference you should read is an excellent work entitled “April 1865”. It documents the issues and the dangers facing the Union as the Civil War drew to a close.

Did you know that many leaders and Generals of the Confederacy wanted to continue the conflict without surrender? Guerilla War in other words. Like other third world countries.

The main reason that it didn’t happen was because of one person. General Robert E. Lee. Such was his personal authority and respect with everyone in the Army and the entire Confederacy that when he said publicly that it was over and that the time had come to lay down their arms. Most of the Confederacy accepted it. And it was over.

And now his statues are torn down, his portrait removed from West Point where it has hung in honor. We should be ashamed.

  4. Check out the book Clouds of Glory: The Life and Legend of Robert E. Lee, by Michael Korda. Lee has been demonized by the current woke BS going on.
