It’s that time of year when thoughts turn towards getting or hatching some chicks, so we thought we would dedicate this article to hatching eggs whether they be your own hens or bought eggs.
According to reports TRactor Supply change their chicken feed formula back in the fall causing chickens to either stop laying altogether or have reduced egg production.
I've gotten at least a half dozen emails about that this morning. Here's my reply:
I feed my 5 laying birds DuMoore scratch (mentioned in another article) and Producer's Pride layer feed, both from Tractor Supply, and am getting 3-4 eggs a day which is right at normal for their breed. Matter of fact, I just got back from town where I bought another 50 pounds of each. If it is true and it's caused by a lack of protein, it's easy enough to boost that by throwing them some shredded meat scraps, diced hardboiled eggs or dried meal worms.
