My wife bought a box of them today at our Walgreens located in the more colorful part of town. We had to go there to pick up one of her monthly drugs that they were out of at the store that we get the rest of her prescriptions from. Of course we had to go to that one, also. But the first place has a dollar aisle, so she likes to go there anyway. Me not so much, since I prefer to drive thru to get her prescriptions.
Along with moonpies, we'd eat ice cream in cardboard. Picture a rectangular ice cream sandwhich. Now remove the thin cookie crusts on each side. Put the ice cream in a rectangle made of thin cardboard (actually just thick paper). Push the ice cream up from the bottom. Maybe it was just a North Carolina thing.
Here in Michigan, we have a similar thing. They are called Push-ups, and are a round tube, with orange sherbet in them. They have a round plastic follower with a straw shaped plastic handle in the middle to hold while you push them up and hold on to while you eat the ice cream.
I wouldn't be surprised if you loved them as a kid and gagged on them now. The real question is, are they the same now as they were, then? Probably not. High Fructose Corn Syrup didn't exist then, for one thing. The recipe has almost certainly changed and the quality is almost certainly worse, and sweeter besides.
I had not had one of those things for decades and saw some in the stope , I bought some and same thing had one bite and about hurled they are way too sweet . Might as well just pour some karo syrup down the hatch . Rather have some good jerky now
Ha! I still love ‘em. Twinkies, not so much.
ReplyDeleteI can have a mini pie every once in a while. Just for the memories.

DeleteMoon Pie and a Coke!
ReplyDeleteHeresy! Moon Pie and an RC Cola, of course.
DeleteA Moon pie ain't nuthin unless there's an RC Cola to wash it down.
ReplyDeleteRC and a Moon pie. A child’s dream.
DeleteAnd that's pronounced "Ar-a Cee Cola"
DeleteI don't see how people drink that shit. When I was a kid I thought the only soft drinks worse than RC were Tab and Dr Pepper.
DeleteLoved me some of them wagon wheels back in the day,

ReplyDeleteYou should have admitted you can't hack Moonpie. Now you'll have to be deported to someplace in Yankeeland.
ReplyDeleteWierd, I never liked chocolate. My kid dosen't either. I'm sure I tried a moon pie and probably a twinkie but don't remember.
ReplyDeleteFor some odd reason, after reading these comments I have an urge to visit my dentist for a thorough teeth cleaning.
