Fueled by Deception. How You’re Getting Ripped Off at the Pump!

 VIDEO HERE  (16:42 minutes)

We've got 4 or 5 stations here in Lafayette that sell pure gas, and all of the ones I've been to have dedicated pumps that sell nothing but ethanol free fuel so there's no chance of a bleed-over. Most of them have pumps that are on another island at the station, completely separated from the ethanol fuels. You'll top off your truck at one island then have to drive 50 feet away to top of your fuel cans for your small engines.

  2. You've just expressed another reason to love life in Lafayette. I can't get ethanol-free fuel unless I drive 40 miles to the valley or go to the local airport and pay over $5.30 a gallon for aviation fuel. Then it's best to cut that fuel with lower octane fuel, as AV fuel is hard on Honda equipment. That means you're blending it with ethanol fuel, which negates the point of buying aviation fuel to begin with. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Another alternative is to buy TSC ethanol-free 50-1 mix fuel at $32 a gallon. Who can afford that?

The dedicated ethanol free pumps in Lafayette sound like they're well worth the trouble. I'm envious.

    2. If you're getting AVgas for $5.30 that's a good price. 'round here it's closer to $7. Honda engines are built to tight manufacturing tolerances. Avgas has lead in it. It's often referred to as 100LL, as it's 100 octane and has a low amount of lead compared to what was available years ago. The lead can cause sticky valves in tight engines like the Honda. Some people run an additive like Alcor TCP Fuel Treatment to help with the lead deposits. disclaimer: (your mileage may vary)

  3. I never use a pump that has a single source hose for filling. I have an 06 Electraglide and after a stage 2 performance upgrade I had it dyno tuned with 91 octane real gas. I get 51/52 mpg at 70 mph with 91 octane gas. If I put 93 octane blend in it the best mileage I can get is about 45mpg. The 91 blend gets a little lower mpg. The 88 blend is down in the 30's and the engine is detonating, spitting and sputtering. We would be better off without ethanol.

  4. Mix a cup of water in a gallon of gas, stir it up, let it settle. The water absorbs the alcohol. Drain off the water/alcohol mix and measure it. If you have a 2 cups, find another gas station.

  5. I run any old thing in my Subaru and it never complains but my old K10 won't go on 87 or even 89 octane fuel with ethanol. It starts cold and idles fine, but I get no low-end torque and warm starting sucks. So, I found a place that sells 90 octane 100% gasoline for about the same price as their 89 octane stuff. It's still unleaded but like deisel, it gets dispensed with its own separate hose, so you don't have to worry that there's a bunch of ethanol remaining in the system from the last customer. So, all I have to do is add some Redex and my truck is happy, valve seats and all.
I did manage to get hold of a 55 gallon drum of 100LL aviation fuel once for only a couple bucks more than premium unleaded, but that's long gone. I can still get other racing fuels, but that shit is over $14 a gallon now and I ain't rich.

  8. Living in the SC Lowcountry on a Sea Island, we have oodles of Marine Fuel solo pumps. I get 15% better mileage in my Tundra. I was an Esso distributor, and this gasohol crap ruins engines.

  9. yup. real gas is 4.50 here in the pa highlands. my problem is the damn truck is a 2016.
no real change in mileage to speak of. and yes, it has a separate hose.
and it only 90 octane too. I am thinking of getting a 55 gallon barrel to store/save some
as I just know the price is going to go higher.
still have close to 30 gallons in cans with stabil added to them.

    1. I fueled up with pure gas in my 2001 F-150 with a brand spanking new engine in it just to see if the mileage was any better. There was a noticeable increase in power, but the improvement in the mileage didn't justify the extra cost.

  10. The Buccee's in Texas all have a separate complex that offers a variety of ethanol-free gas - But they're pretty much all in or around the big cities. One thing to check: Murphy USA has a lot of stations around Walmarts, particularly the Super Centers - and many of them offer what they call "E0", which is 1% or less of ethanol, 87octane I think. I haven't checked out our local one yet, but I think they might share filling hoses with the ethanol blends, so......

  11. I have a 2018 Pacifica van with a transmission problem. If I try to accelerate through 30 or 60 MPH but take my foot off the gas at that point, my transmission acts like it is going to fall out. It is like I got rear ended. Ethanol free gas minimizes that problem. God knows why ethanol free gas does that. I pay 70 cents a gallon more a gallon for ethanol free gas 50 miles south east of dallas.

  12. Way back when that crap was first being jammed down our throats I noticed that my 2000 Isuzu mileage had suddenly dropped ~ 2mpg - from 20mpg to 18mpg. Couldn't figure out what was going on until I noticed the new sign on the pump at the station I frequented - contains 10% ethanol. What most people have never figured out is that typically - due to its lower Btu/gal - a vehicle is going to get fewer miles out of a gallon of crap gas then from a gallon of un-adulterated gas. So this whole thing is just a scam to let ADM make a few extra billion every year.

  14. I found a place near Cookeville that sells 93 octane pure gas out of a dedicated pump; they call it "marine gas". I go visit a friend in Sparta and make sure I take my small engine cans when I go down there.

Thanks to Elmo on the heads up about Hondas. My splitter is a Honda and I will look that up.

    1. I heard that on a Blancolirio YouTube video. He was talking to his friend the local Honda dealer back when the PG&E Public Safety Power Shutoffs started and the dealer recommended lower octane gas for Honda engines.

It was on another Blancolirio video about a month ago he was pointing out the $5.30 AV fuel and both he and the airport guy were marveling at the low price. They didn't explain why it was so low.

And thank you for the tip on 'marine gas'. That stuff sounds perfect.
Anon above said AV fuel is 100 octane. I think I had heard that before.

  15. When I fill up my gas cans I fill the truck first and then the can so I get the gas I want. As to ethanol, your mileage will go down some. Depends on how sensitive your O2 sensor is. If you rebuild motors you will see what Ethanol does to engine. Keeps it cleaner inside. Used to be you would have 1/2 inch or more of sludge to clean out of the pan on a rebuild. Now not so much. More mis-information about ethanol than any thing else.

  16. One of our local stations has non-ethanol gas but it's in with one of the ethanol pumps. It costs more but I buy it for my lawn equipment.

  18. I've got 12 or so small engines I buy gas for. I've got no Ethanol free gas close to me. So, I've gotten very good at working on small engines (and buying replacement parts). Stinkin' government...
