I had a cousin of mine that lives in SC theorize that Trump saw how much of a trainwreck Nikki Haley was as governor. He offered her the UN position as it was one that she had to follow his policy or she would have been fired and she could do little damage if she fucked up. It also opened up her vacated governor position as anyone was better for SC than she was. It was also political suicide if she turned down the UN position.
