TN bill would create penalty for leaving unlocked guns in cars

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — More guns were stolen from cars in Nashville last year than any other year on record, with over 3,600 firearms reported missing by December.

Now, a proposed law would make it a misdemeanor for gun owners to improperly store firearms or ammunition in a car or boat. The law would not apply if the gun was kept from “ordinary observation” and locked in a trunk, glove box or locked container attached to the car or boat.

I bought a lockbox several years ago in case I had to travel through a gun-hostile state or for one of those few cases I had to leave my gun in my truck for whatever reason.
I've loaned the damned thing out more than I used it. Seriously, I use it so rarely I couldn't even tell you which vehicle it's in at the moment.

  1. Sounds like a common sense law. I'm sure the Bros in Nashville & Memphis will run out and steal a lock box to comply.

  2. Sounds like (another) ill-fated and misdirected attempt to "patch" the holes in gun control laws. This time, by making it more difficult to claim a gun was stolen when you in fact sold it to someone who would otherwise have a hard time buying a gun.

Like all fascist crackdowns, I'm sure this will simply causes more resentment and less trust of the law and its enforcers.

  3. I favor this law ONLY IF it comes with "No Gun Free Zones for CCW Licencees". Most guns are left in cars because CCW'ers have to bow to the "No Guns" signs.

  4. How about just locking the fucking doors and turn the whole vehicle into a "lockbox"?

    1. The guy who killed Kate Steinle stole the weapon from a government vehicle that was locked. Got any other bright suggestions?

  5. So, someone breaks into your car and you get punished. How about a law specifying mandatory castration for anyone caught stealing a gun? Punish the thief, not the victim.

    1. and how do you intend to castrate a "menstruating person"?
      (braided) hemp is far better

  6. How about making firearm theft a mandatory death penalty offense, along with possession of a stolen firearm?

  7. That gun you’re looking for disappeared from my car while in Nashville. Could it be the new alternative to the boating accident while carrying?

  8. What they need is a law that allows you to shoot someone breaking into your vehicle to steal a firearm. It could become the next state sport of Tennessee. Allows for baiting the car with some nonfunctional or airsoft-type gun.
