What Killed Tyre Nichols

Is U.S. policing in a death spiral? Yes, as long as the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols by five Memphis police officers is portrayed as a manifestation of racism. The problems underlying that horrifying episode—the recruitment crisis, lax hiring standards, and depolicing—will worsen, intensified by the very policies ostensibly adopted to prevent another such travesty. The vicious circle of rising crime and a flight from the profession will accelerate.

President Joe Biden adopted the racism narrative before much was known about the Nichols beating. Even before the videos from the officers’ body cameras had been released, Biden was blaming Nichols’s death on systemic racism. After the video release, Biden claimed that the killing was representative of what “black and brown Americans experience every single day.” He reinforced that theme in his recent State of the Union speech. “Every single time” a black child walks in the street, plays in a park, or gets into a car, Biden said, his parents rightly worry that racist cops might kill him before he makes it home. “What happened to Tyre in Memphis happens too often,” Biden alleged.

  1. I know someone else that sure needs to be worried.

  2. If people responsible hiring police officers and, for 'equity' reasons only select unqualified BLACK police officers this murder INDEED is caused by racism.
    Racism created by democrats.

    1. This is the second time I've seen this comment. Why not wait until you've done a bit of research and actually do know whether or not it's true before you post?

    2. I thought I read that those cops were gang members, but not the same gang as the victim.

  7. I was hoping from the title to get some insight into what did kill him. Agreed whatever it was can be blamed on the terrible and tragic traffic stop, but was it internal trauma, a brain bleed, what? I live in the Memphis area and have watched this coverage for weeks and have not heard this addressed. What injuries could not be handled by three days in a modern hospital....but maybe I watch too many tv doctor shows. Maybe one of you will know and can fill me in.

    1. Are you really that naive? Beating someone to death isn't that hard to do, especially by a gang of five violent thugs who have been trained in beating the shit out of people.

  8. I'm wondering just what happened between the initial traffic stop and the bodycam showing Nichols being pulled out of his car.
Just what did he say/do to light off those five black cops?

  10. I know he was beat to death, that's not the argument. Did they "beat his brains out", did they break his ribs and puncture his lungs, did they damage his spleen, did they struggle to save him in the hospital? You would think those details would be front and center.

    1. Need the autopsy report to answer those questions or wait for the ME to testify.

  11. Medical opinion here, with no factual knowledge of the case. Given the severity of the beating to his head, he probably had an intracerebral hemorrhage (bleeding in the brain tissue) or an epidural bleed (in the space between the brain and skull). Associated swelling will increase the pressure on the brain, which, being softer than bone, will become compromised leading to loss of function to control things like breathing, blood pressure, and other necessaries.

  12. When discussing "racism" you first need to recognize that the biggest problem in urban areas is black on black crime, theft, murder, shootings, etc. Yes I said black on black; white on black crime doesn't even register.

    1. Correct and ironically, Biden's statement '...that the killing was representative of what “black and brown Americans experience every single day.” ' is one of the most accurate things he has said in the last several years.
