"I’ve always thought there were a lot of older guns that deserve to be reproduced, many of which could be really simple to manufacture. PSA is planning the release of their StG44 repro which is exciting. But why don’t we see this sort of thing more often. I suppose not everyone in the firearms community is going to want this sort of thing, but I think there are a lot of guns that would sell well enough to justify their reproduction."
Fundamentally, we don't see more reproduction firearms because they are actually a lot harder and more expensive to make than people would think, and the market for them is small than people would think. Re-engineering old firearms for new production is a really substantial project, and the original data required rarely exists. The guns must be cheap enough and reliable enough to attract modern buyers, which will often require compromises on authenticity - which immediately reduces the already-small pool of potential buyers.

I ordered a Winchester 1876 Carbine chambered in 45-60 two years ago, I'm still awaiting delivery.....
ReplyDeleteVery nice. I hope they're keeping you apprised of the progress in making and delivering it to you and that you get it soon. That's a long time to wait to get something that special.
DeleteI have a GSG Mp40 in 9mm and love it, cant wait on getting a STG44.
ReplyDeleteI have one of those MP40s as well. SBR’d on a form 1.
DeleteAbsolute waste of money…but it looks cool
Thought about it too but cant find a stock for it.
DeleteWhy wish for a repro (semi only) of a machine gun?
ReplyDeleteI have four black powder pistols, 2 36cal and 2 44cal, one which is a Remington. The 36 cal Pocket is the most pleasurable to shoot. I also have a 76 cal Enfield rifle black powder. All are dirty when firing them, and they take a lot of soap and water to clean, then you have to oil them. But, they are fun to shoot. Wouldn’t take them into a fight though.
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted a Ballard repo in a straight walled cartridge. The dream was to have a weekend match among like minded gentlemen followed by an evening of fine brandy, good cigars and bragging of past feats of unbelievable marksmanship.
ReplyDeleteI would have kind of liked a reproduction broomhandle Mauser. Not a carry piece, though.
ReplyDeleteI would also love a good retro broomhandle Mauser, in a solid modern chambering. Maybe even with a detachable magazine as a bonus feature.
DeleteHandful of repro Colt pistols, plus one Remington 1858 six-gun converted to fire cartridges. Half dozen cap-n-ball revolvers, both Colt and Remington pattern. Multiple lever actions (not really repro I guess, but maybe IDK). Rossi model 92, several Winchester model 94's. Would love some more, Browning hi-wall or maybe some similar. Already have a Springfield '03, not a repro but original. Would love a shooter version as I'm a little scared of shooting the one I have (low serial number, bad metallurgy according to the internet of things).
ReplyDeleteOverall, outside of a carry piece, I'd buy nothing but good reproductions of antique pieces just for the fun of it. Especially maybe a Garand that didn't cost an arm and leg.
