Cherokee Indians Tribal Council Votes for Car/Bodycam Exemption after SWAT Shooting

“During its April 6 meeting, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Tribal Council unanimously approved an ordinance change exempting police car and body cam videos from the tribe’s public records law,” Holly Kays of the Smoky Mountain News reports. “The vote comes on the heels of a Dec. 13, 2022, Cherokee Indian Police Department SWAT response in which officers fired at Murphy resident Jason Harley Kloepfer after he opened the door to his home with his hands held above his head, according to a home security video Kloepfer posted Jan. 18.”

  2. So...police want to make sure they can murder you accidentally and not be forced to release the video of their fuckup publicly...huh....and Republicans think "defund the police" is a bad idea.

  3. If I'm reading this correctly, body cams are for the cops and not for John Q public's use?

    1. Try reading the article. It happened in North Carolina. Even the very first sentence says 'The Eastern Band of Cherokee Tribal Council...'

    2. I've heard similar complaints about the tribal police in SE OK. They are in it for the money.

    3. Most, if not all, Tribal Councils are run like the Mafia, all the money for the big guys, none for the peons, piss off the TC and you're dead or screwed. There would be little to no poverty on most reservations if the TCs dealt the tribal subsidies out fairly, like the Native Americans say they do, unlike the White People. Yeah, right.

    4. I'd assume that "Eastern Band" would mean east of Tulsa...Did Andrew Jackson miss some of the Cherokee, or did they move back there after he was gone?

    7. To markm. My mom grew up around Fontana Dam in NC. We used to go there when I was a kid and we would always visit what I recall being a Cherokee reservation in the area. It was mostly a tourist trap at the time and it was 60 years ago, so my recollections are not crystal clear. I remember coming back with rubber knives and tomahawks. It helped when we played cowboys and indians when we got back home.

  6. Lived around fucking Indians, Klamath Oregon Tribe, for 4 years and had to move before we got into a major gun battle. Most hate white people and think we owe them everything. Would scare the shit out of me if they had a SWAT team.

    1. The conquered never like their conquerors. The best and honorable of the conquered were killed off; those living today are the remnants.

    2. The mistake they made was putting them on reservations. The Indians should either have been integrated with society or exterminated.

  8. In the near future, I would not be surprised to read of a SWAT team wiped out after being lured into a murder hole.

    1. Now, now. It's already the second decade of the twenty-first century. In this, the current day, we call them "public safety holes".

  9. If I'm not mistaken, the only way they could get away with this is by not making calls off Rez.

  10. Absolutely unconstitutional to have sovereign states (resrvations) within the USA. What Beans says agrees with what I know about tribes in various western states.
Lots of corruption and graft. Lots of high dealing to a select few, the rest of their people can suck eggs as far as the council is concerned.
