  2. #9 They say that people get concussions from being hit in the head by soccer balls. I have gotten concussions from football. The difference between being hit in the head by a ball and a concussion by playing football is incomparable.

    1. Not true. The force of the impact is not the major contributor. The type of "bounce" you brain takes is critical as well. The worst are when you brain hits one way, then violently bounces and hit in the opposite direction. Follow on concussions when the initial one isn't fully healed are also very devastating. Lot's of long term neurological damage. TBI is TBI, doesn't matter if it's you head hitting a mat, a helmet contact, a ball hitting your head, or an IED bouncing your head around. It is also very dependent on each individuals physiology. Some people never have traditional symptoms, but develop long term CTE (me). Others have traditional symptoms from what looks to the outside world as just a nothing impact. And it changes as you age and your brain develops.

    2. The concussion happens when the brain suddenly stops when the head takes a hard hit, like from a helmet to helmet hit, or a car accident or a fall from a height. The quick deceleration allows the brain to hit the skull from the inside, which causes damage to brain tissue, like a bruise, and it swells, which can lead to concussion or to an issue of lack of oxygen, and the need for emergency action by a medical professional in order to do something to relieve the swelling or to open the skull to give the brain somewhere to let it expand without putting pressure on that expanding brain tissue.
The Mayo Clinic website actually says that concussions are usually caused by a blow to the head, but that a blow to other parts of the face or body can cause rotational forces that allow the brain to cause concussion, which in some cases the person might not even know they have a concussion.
I certainly was not trying to say that someone in your case could not actually get a concussion from ways other than a severe blow to the head via playing football. My point was that having played football for 9 years, with several opportunities to play at the college level, I experienced concussions at least 5 times, playing 3/4th of a game with no knowledge of playing, after being knocked out completely. And that after also having a dislocated jaw. So I know how hard you can get hit in contact sports, and what concussions can do in your latter years. I have been on Social Security Disability for both a back that was broken at age 20 and is just worn out, and also chronic daily migraine headaches, with the number of concussions likely a contributing factor. And my brain has some issues now with short term memory and finding the right words that I want to say. I don't have any mental health issues in my family history.
No matter, I wish you the best with you TBI, knowing that CTE is a serious thing, and the outcome of it can be devastating. Myself, I have had migraines since I have been an adult, and still seek a decent treatment. Nothing so far has been successful but I never give up. And the neurologist that I have now is willing to continue to work with me, to find the right combination of meds to find a treatment that works for me, as well. Be well, and thank you for your post. I know that much of your words are spot on.

    3. Pigpen, Well said. Concussions are not well understood by many, and I do agree that football, as much as i love it, has a lot of them.

  11. #2 not OSHA approved. There's rebar sticking up without a bright orange plastic cap to reduce the risk of people impaling themselves. Dude's luck we wasn't a couple feet closer to the car, he'd be sporting an iron enema.

  12. I feel for the little kid in #1. I was about 6 when I told my dad I'd help bringing in the groceries. I picked up a bag and he said "be careful there's a dozen eggs on top". 71 years later, I can still see those eggs on the ground.
