17 insurance claims before somebody got suspicious...

A San Bernardino County couple charged with intentionally causing car crashes and then posting videos of them on YouTube was sentenced on Tuesday after pleading no contest.

Christopher Phelps, 40, and his wife, Kimberly Phelps, 40, both from Yucaipa, were arrested in March and accused of causing crashes in an attempt to collect fraudulent insurance payouts, officials said.

Let's see,  I was 18 when I got my motorcycle license and 22 when I got my license for a car and I've filed 3 claims in all that time, two for accidents where I wasn't at fault and one for an under the hood fire.

  2. I'm 60 years old and have filed twice for insurance damages. Both accidents were not my fault and the benefits to repair my truck(s) were about $3000. I figure that my vehicle insurance payments over nearly 40 years is about $20,000.

Same with home insurance. Been paying home insurance since 1995 and in 28 years, have never made a single claim. My half of house premium is about $850 a year, times 28 = $23,800.

But in catastrophic loss, that is why I don't bitch that much. I'm just wondering how far insurance gratitude will be.

    1. Just remember, if you *do* have a catastrophic loss, DO NOT talk to the insurance company. Hire a lawyer, have them talk to the insurance. If you don't hire a lawyer, the insurance company WILL dick around for as long as they think they can get away with, and then pay a pittance. If you have the lawyer do it, they'll usually pay up right quick, and in full, because they know darn well they'll get sued and have to pay in full anyway if they don't.

But on a $200K payment? Every month they delay is quite a bit of interest!

Had a friend who got paid a pittance, and that about two years afterwards. Don't do that.

    2. I am 72 and filed a claim for hail damage just to see if they would pay. They paid for 1/2 of the new roof. My only claim. I believe insurance is a communist concept. Everyone contributes, only a few get money but the insurance company gets rich

  3. I bought a POS Lincoln from a friend for $800.
A week later the wife was at the Walmart when a surprise gust of wind blew a potted plant stand over onto the hood.
Literally, no damage. Out of the blue
    Walmart sent me $1400.

  4. They are getting away with multiple insurance claims because crooked independent claims adjusters are getting a kick back. Folllow the money.

  5. Probably overlooked because they were from Yucaipa. At one time, as I recall, Yucaipa Boulevard was said to be the most accident prone street in Southern California.
