I will have to agree that direct impingement is nasty. But after having a keltec sub200 for a while, I decided an AR platform couldnt get much nastier. Turns out I was right, plus the AR is easier to clean than the sub2000.
Army EOD was issued M-16A2's up until I retired in 2000. While I like and have several different M-forgeries, one of my favorite bullet launchers is an AR-15A2 I built myself. 100 percent rifle from the stock and buffer to the 20 inch FN cold hammer-forged barrel. A little heavy, but a pleasure to shoot. BTW, Stoner was a genius and if you ask the piston conversion guys, honest ones will tell you they have enough problems with them that they would not rely on them in a SHTF scenario. Eod1sg Ret
