NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Franklin Alderman Gabrielle Hanson is creating controversy following an email she sent to the CEO of Nashville International Airport (BNA), urging the airport’s board to reconsider their support of a Franklin-based coalition’s upcoming Juneteenth event.
The Franklin Justice and Equity Coalition is set to host a Juneteenth celebration on June 17 in downtown Franklin.
In her email, Hanson urged the airport’s board of directors to discontinue their support of the Franklin Justice & Peace Coalition.
As best I remember from living in Dallas in the '80s and '90s, Juneteenth never had any meaning outside of Texas.
ReplyDeleteAs a life-long Texan, I agree - Juneteenth never had any meaning outside of Texas, and damned little inside Texas either. The areas I've lived in have been majority white / minority hispanic (or vice-versa) with very few blacks. No one I know has ever celebrated it. Cinco de Mayo is a whole nother story.
ReplyDeleteThat said, the article is a bit misleading and I actually agree with the sentiment of the alderman. She's not protesting the actual holiday (fake though it may be for Tennessee), but rather that a new BLM group has taken over control of it from a long standing African American rights group. So now we're seeing infighting between various groups with BLM groups trying to push out older more established groups. As one famous jew remarked, it's a shame they can't both lose.
Anyone else that sees the humorous irony of juneteenth being the day after Father's Day? :P
ReplyDeleteJuneteenf is the only june holiday that black men celebrate
DeleteAs a national holiday "Juneteenth" has very little to offer the whole country. In far West Kentucky, the blacks have celebrated the 8th of August for as long as I can remember. Black populations across the South all have/had different days to celebrate, just depending on when the news reached them. The Feds should have left well enough alone.
ReplyDeleteGrowing up at my little country church outside of Houston, we'd "celebrate" Juneteenth with fried chicken, watermelon, and RC cola.
ReplyDeleteNiggas gonna nig.
ReplyDeleteDat's what dey do.
Was asked if we worked Monday. Had to ask why. Dude said it's Juneteenth. I looked at him asked what it that. Repeated himself. Told him no we work but may use your PTO. He did not seem happy. Oh well.
