The Documented Cases: POWs Left Behind

The actual story of Prisoners of War (POWs) left behind in previous wars is quite documented but became obscured by hoax POW pictures, small time scams, and other diversions.  This is the story of those POWs left behind in Laos and Vietnam, drawn on facts from government published reports and official testimony from high-level figures such as former U.S. Defense Secretary and CIA Director James Schlesinger who testified under oath that POWs remained behind in 1973 at the end of the Vietnam War.  For example, Colonel David Hrdlicka was shot down over Laos in 1965, and it was not known he was a POW until his pictures appeared as a POW in a Soviet newspaper. The Laos government never acknowledged his status and he remains behind to this day.

  4. If Stockdale had had his way, McCain and a few others would have been court-martialed upon their return.

  7. Colonel Robert L. Howard, flew at personal expense from Germany to the District of Criminals to give testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee. He had just arrived to take command of the HHC pending his next assignment as Commander of 10th SF Group in Bad Toelz. His testimony, he said to me afterwards, was that he had been part of an SF Group in Thailand, tasked with locating live American POWs - in the 80s, mind you - and that he told the Committee he and his team had found them, that he had actually talked to and touched one through the cage. I believed him. Upon his return to Germany after the New Year, he was abruptly informed that he was no longer slotted to command 10th SF and that he should start planning his retirement.
I became aware of the issue because the Corps Commander's ADC tasked me to go down to the local PX and purchase all - repeat, all - copies of the January 1986 Soldier of Fortune magazine. The cover page highlighted 3 articles, the second of which was titled "POW/MIA: A Nation Shamed". Page 38 was titled POWs vs. Uncle Sam, A Sad Saga of Forgotten Heroes, by Jim Coyne.

Just a few lines from an articlle which spanned 12 pages:
". . . the following account is not taken from a novel or some celluloid Hollywood fantasy. If is about real people in real iife. As you read it's hard to escape the old adage: truth is stranger than fiction.
(retired Green Beret Major Mark) Smith's attorney, Mark Warple, showed up to make a startling announcement on behalf of Smith and others. Not only has the U.S. government known for severaJ years that live U.S. POWs remain in Southeast Asia, Warple said his clients have proof tha U.S. officials passed up an opportunity to rescue them and has engaged in a coverup aimed at discrediting -- and possibly eliminating -- Smith and other would-be rescuers.
The lawsuit, which was filed by Smith and SF Sergeant First Class Melvin "Mac" McIntire - both assigned to a top secret mission in Thailand aimed at gathering intelligence on whether living U.S. POWs were still being held in Southeast Asia . . ."

If you can find a copy it is very interesting reading. Be aware though, that SOF is out of business and their archives have been disappeared.
