Trimble had been searching for a Sig P365 X Macro for weeks. The problem was, so had everybody else. Bass Pro wanted around $800 for the 9mm. Trimble didn’t hesitate. He told the salesperson he wanted it, completed a Form 4473, and handed over his Florida Concealed Weapon or Firearm License, which exempts him from a waiting period. Trimble had purchased numerous firearms from Bass Pro Shop in the past, so he expected to walk out of the store with his new pistol in minutes.

I know this story is about a gun purchase denial, but who in the world takes their fishing reel in to a store to have it re-spooled?
As far as respooling the reel, it may be one of those 'perks' they offer for free when they sold him the reel. It's cheap enough for them and gets the customer into the store again, and it this case it would have resulted in a nice additional purchase if they hadn't screwed it up.
ReplyDeleteTire store in my town offers free remounting or tire rotation for tires bought in the store. You probably won't go in for just that but get the regular service done at the same time.
But still, I was putting line on mine and my dad's reels before I went to first grade.
DeleteLots of people do that. Drop your stuff off at Broadway bait come back a few days later to pick it up all finished. The people that I know that do that run their own businesses and don’t have the time or skills but they have the money and love to fish and hunt.
DeleteIts all part of a government conspiracy man... to make people dependent on the state man. Like big brother and shit.
DeleteI stopped buying new at the big box stores and online a while back. I met local FFLs and deal with them now on the infrequent occasions that I decide to purchase . Yes, I spend a little bit more but prefer dealing with local and known. Just me, YMMV.
ReplyDeleteI didn't get the whole re-spooling thing either. Of course I am no fishing expert, but I still do my own stuff.
The criminals running BATFEces will revoke a FFL license for the tiniest of paperwork errors...or for no actual reason. That makes many corporate firearms dealers paranoid. They will deny a purchase if there is any chance at all they could lose their FFL license. Blame this on the Fed Gov rogue agencies and there war on our Rights.
ReplyDeleteI get reels re-spooled when I want to try a different line, but don’t want to buy a whole spool.

And your line can take a “set” on the spool and then be a real pain if it sits stored too long.
DeleteI agree. The ATF can withdraw your license to sell for the slightest infraction. They now use a computer to review dealers transactions, and squash an FFL if a sale is kicked out for the slightest reason.
ReplyDeleteI have a friend who is a gunsmith that does a brisk business cleaning guns. I'm not talking about detail strip down to the last pin and screw cleaning, but a simple after a day at the range field strip and clean. It's amazing how many people will pay someone $75 to do that.
ReplyDeleteRe-spooling gives me an excuse to sit in the garage for a while, drinking beer and sorting thru my fishing gear. Like I need an excuse to sit in the garage and drink beer, but there it is. I've had a reel spooled when I bought it new, but never took one back to re-spool.
ReplyDeleteLocal gun store, my wife and son went to buy my Christmas present several years back. Clerk talked to my wife, emphasized that there's one "trick" question that a lot of people mess up, said he couldn't coach her and couldn't tell her which, but he described it in detail. Then told her to take her time filling out the form, and told her one mistake and he couldn't sale her anything, couldn't even let her fill out a second form. She got it right, but admitted later she was super nervous. And both her and myself have a concealed carry license, passed an intense background check already, so all of that is total BS anyway.
All this for an enumerated right in the constitution. Fuck them all.
BTW, that present was a .22 rimfire semi-auto rifle with red-dot scope. It's now my wife's favorite gun and she'll burn thru a brick at the range with it every time. I barely got to shoot it beyond sighting in. Damn.

I won't be spending any more of my hard earned money at Bass Pro Shops....
ReplyDeleteNot that I ever spent much money at Bass Pro, but I won't be spending any money there in the future.
ReplyDeleteSteven Y.
There are laws that (nominally, anyway) keep the ATF from creating a database of gun owners.
ReplyDeleteBass Pro has done it for them. There is no protection for that database, if the ATF asks for it, they can get it.
So, Bass Pro has turned into Dicks. A damned shame. I was never a Bass Pro fan, but they bought Cabelas, which I did (past tense) shop at. No more, neither of them.
Bought a nice revolver at Cabelas (owned by BP) early this year. Three clerks/managers separately reviewed my 4473 and DL - then at the cash register three more clerks did it all again. Their level of paranoia is pretty high, and it didn't make for a great experience (unlike Academy, which has two people look it over and they seem happy to make the sale).
