"Whoops, our bad"

FRISCO, Texas - Frisco police said an officer’s mistake led to a "high risk" traffic stop where a family was held at gunpoint.

The family from Arkansas was headed to Grapevine earlier this month.

An officer ran the license plate on their Dodge Charger but mistakenly entered it as being from Arizona instead of Arkansas. That led him to believe the car was stolen.

  1. A decade ago, the now-ex misplaced her car and reported it stolen. When she found it, she failed to unreported it. 9 months later we're driving through Arizona in a 75mph zone. An Arizona highway patrolman falls in behind us. She panics and asks the speedlimit and decides to drop to 70mph. He slows down. She slows down to 65. He slows down. A long line of cars grows behind us because people don't want to pass a highway patrol car.

Eventually another highway patrol car comes from the other direction, throws a U, and together they pull us over. The patrolman walks up, no guns drawn, and acts like it's a normal stop. Arizona is a constitutional carry state. Most professional encounter I've ever had with law enforcement.

  2. No biggie. It's a perfect example of: "That's why they put erasers on pencils"

    1. Mistake was caught promptly, on scene, and apology promptly and sincerely rendered. If I were the jury, I'd find the cops did their job and bill the plaintiff. This one is a classic case of when an attorney should tell the family to suck it up. Probably won't, there's likely a few bucks to be made at least by the attorney.

You may change your tune after you've been ordered out of the car, treated like a dangerous felon, and arrested, all while under gun point.

Then watching your family, one by one, treated the same way.

    3. And at no point in the process did the cops realize their mistake. It was the driver and wife who told them of the mistake.
Even then, the cops were reluctant to believe there was a mistake. This was very easy to check, but it took a while before they even did that.

    4. Living here in rural Arkansas I can testify to the looks of a lot of people in these mountains. Look like meth dealers and worse. Local county cops usually get a back up and hands on their pistols. Moved here from Teas in2006 and still carry a Glock every damn day! Learned that the hard way back in Fort Worth. Won't do that again!

  7. And if one of the kids had sneezed and mom had instinctively reached for a tissue...they'd all be dead, because of a goddamn mistake. Fuck. So fucking stupid.
