A panel of federal appellate judges unanimously ruled Thursday that Detroit's practice of seizing people's cars for months at a time before giving them a chance to contest the seizure violates vehicle owners' 14th Amendment right to due process.

Wow, something good actually came out of Detroit. I'm impressed.
It took a panel of federal judges to explain the plain english of the Constitution to them. Sad.
ReplyDeleteThis might have long-lasting implications. Red flag laws fall in the same bucket, and have been blatantly ignored.
DeleteBurn down the tow yards holding these vehicles.
ReplyDeleteWhy not return them to their rightful owners?
DeleteI was stationed on Selfridge ANG Base, a suburb of Detriot in the mid to late 80's. Da Mayor, Coleman Young, surprisingly said and did a lot of things that I felt made perfect sense. And back then, I was damn sure more "republican" than I am today. I honestly liked the man, and being Army guys in suits looking for bombs for any asshole candidate that got matching funds, I had the opportunity to be around Da Mayor quite a few times, cause all the demorats wanted his endorsement. Of course, Mayor Young had been a Tuskegee Airman in the big war, so there's that. Eod1sg Ret
ReplyDeleteI don't think that counts as "something good out of Detroit." Merely something less horrible. Which is still a movement in the right direction, of course, but let's not delude ourselves.
