Imagine that, tar coming out of the ground near the Le Brea Tar Pits

Pools of oozing tar have prompted officials to put up signs warning drivers on Masselin Avenue Wednesday in the Mid-Wilshire neighborhood of Los Angeles.

The leakage has been going on for a few days now and there have been reports of tar splattering onto cars that were driving down Masselin between Olympic Boulevard and 8th Street.

  1. Caused by “rising groundwater”? I thought California was having the worst drought in history because of global warming.

  2. Tar's bad, but wait for the Woolly Mammoths to pop up.

  3. I'm sure it's really caused by rising CO2 levels.

  4. Of course. Global Warming causes everything AND the direct opposite. Cold summer? Global warming. Hot summer? Global warming. Average summer? Also global warming.

  6. I wonder how many people living in LA now are aware of how much oil drilling pumping went on around there back in the '30's?
there were literally forests of oil derricks in some places.
Wow, it's seeping out of the ground, just like it did before people were around.

    1. My grandparents purchased land in neighborhood, and when reselling it retained the mineral rights - which were sold to one of the oil companies. After a couple of generations of inheritance, I still get a few bucks (~20) a quarter in royalties from that.

  8. Ya know what's great at removing tar from your car, Gasoline!
That's right LA, it takes VOCs to remove tar.

  10. But, but, but...it's pollution, even though it comes from Mother earth. All these so called environmentalists scream how bad it is. Buch of dumbasses. It is part of the earth. There's uranium out there too, oh yea, the sun produces radiation too....you are all screwed.

  11. There is a Russian scientist who posited the 'abiotic' theory of oil. In other words, oil is not from dead dinosaurs, but methane under pressure deep underground that becomes oil with heat, time and pressure. By that theory, there is no end to Earth's oil supply. Refilling tar pits and the fact that the famous oil derrick in front of Beverly Hills High School has oil in it again, suggests this may be true.

  12. Funny how we know that diamonds are formed over eons under great heat & pressure, but other forms of hydrocarbons come from some other unknown process.
    Hmmmm.

Relieve the pressure and it will help clean these beaches and eliminate the odor. Too bad the "Stop Fossil Fuel" crowd can't figure that out.
