Newsom blocks California bill that would have banned driverless trucks

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday blocked a bill that would have banned self-driving trucks without a human inside.

Assembly Bill 316 was promoted by supporters as a way to save jobs by prohibiting self-driving trucks weighing more than 10,000 pounds (4,536 kilograms) from operating on public roads unless a person is on board. This includes vehicles such as UPS delivery trucks and larger big rigs.

I want to see how that driverless UPS truck is going to unload their packages and put them on their porches.

  1. They will have a launching arm that throws your package somewhere on your property...just like the do now. Same same.

    1. Yep, either a catapult that will fling the boxes onto the roof, or a conveyor belt that will simply dump the boxes onto the sidewalk. The latter will make it easier for the dindu's to retrieve.

  2. Maybe it's gonna be a self checkout kind of thing.

  3. YaKnow, bills that would allow biggass Crush your car And You trucks to be driverless can be passed After the technology has been proven. How many will suffer, how many will die, before it's not allowed? I think this is just STEWPID.

  4. Of course, that still leaves us in California with a driverless state house and governor's mansion...

    DELIVER?
They'll be 'delivered' at the homes of democrats' favorite thugs. There won't be a need anymore for them to drive and follow the delivery trucks and be porch-pirates. That takes cars off the road, saving the planet too!

    1. Of course these driverless robo-trucks would be electric. California won't reach its desired utopia on the back of a diesel powered truck. Diesel powered trucks are yucky. They kill children.

    1. You won't be able to legislate away "progress." The trucking industry is going to more or less vanish overnight. And it's far from the only one.

    1. And thanks to the toadies in main stream media, the deaths will make the local news without ever making national headlines.

Kind of like the guy that crashed his Tesla and was then incinerated as his car melted down in a fire. He was unable to escape because of Tesla's 'unique safety feature' that locked the doors after the crash. He was trapped inside.

Imagine an 80,000 pound driverless truck careening into a freeway of stopped cars at 70 mph because of a 'software glitch'. My fertile imagination allows me to picture that happening.
Apparently, I have a more vivid imagination than does Gov. Gav.

  9. How many of these Self Driving trucks will get hijacked or hacked and never reach their destinations, with total loss of what was on them?
