Let's take a Weird History Food journey to learn about Zima. People who grew up in the 1990s may feel some nostalgia when thinking about Surge, Shark Bites, or other discontinued foods from the '90s - and those of a certain age will remember Zima. The clear malt beverage was a huge hit when it debuted in 1993, but it wasn't long before Zima became a pop-culture punchline.

moxie's still around...it's a staple up in maine where it originated from. I think it's about the only place it's popular.

ReplyDeletei remember in the late 60's something called fizzies, it was a tablet that you could drop in a glass of water and make a carbonated drink. i remember them being pretty good as a kid.

ReplyDeleteEarly 90's my ex wife worked in an IRS call center. She came home laughing one day, a coworker was drinking zima at her desk and had the boss convinced it was pop.
ReplyDeleteWhen Babylon 5 TV series first came out (in the early 90s?), the writer and producer put a neon Zima sign in the Zocalo, the space station's market area. He thought it was hilarious to think that Zima might still be around in the 23rd century, and this was his way of making fun of it.

ReplyDeleteZima was great. The colder it was served, the better it tasted. Not heavy like a beer, you could chug 5 or 6 of them in a short time on a hot day if you weren’t careful. Problem was, it was something like 360 calories PER bottle, and also had a pretty stout amount of alcohol in it, so if you had 5 or 6 in an hour, it got on top of you pretty quick. I miss it. Wish it was still around. Got some in ‘17 and ‘18, and it was like I was 24 again, in the ‘Corps, stationed at 29 Palms, high speed, low drag, and single. Those were the days. Loved Zima.

ReplyDeleteNever cared for Zima, although the girls I was going out with at the time liked the Bartles & James wine coolers. All I really want to bring back from that time is Jolt cola and $1 a gallon gas.
