America's Largest EV Charging Station is Powered by - you guessed it - Diesel

Kevin Killough at CowboyStateDaily.com has done it again, this time with an expose’ about what California EV advocates boast is the largest EV charging station in the country, the Harris Ranch Tesla Supercharging Station.

Perched at the intersection of Interstate 5 and Highway 198 in California’s Central Valley, the Harris Ranch station boasts a total of 98 Tesla supercharger modules. For all you Texans out there, it’s sort of the EV version of a Buc-ee’s, only without the Wal-Mart-sized convenience store with all the cool souvenirs.

  1. I don't know about the veracity of the article. A Google maps view of the charger station taken by a drone in Feb 2023 shows the Tesla chargers, but nothing like a diesel generator is visible in the area. A 500kW generator (or two) is pretty hard to hide.

    1. 500KW is 670 hp. A 1000 hp diesel generator would fit in 1 car space and is trivial to hide compared to a 500 kW solar array. Extremely hard to beat the energy/power density of fossil fuels.

    2. According to wikipedia, Tesla chargers require massive energy. This is the quote:

"Superchargers supply electrical power at 72 kilowatts (kW), 100 kW, 150 kW or 250 kW."

Other references say that is possible only where the chargers can utilize 480 Volts. And that is just one of the superchargers. Normally I would do the math, but I give te gentle readers of this blog more credit than the normal citizen.

    1. Hopefully their steaks are better that the lean ground beef they sell in some supermarkets. My wife bought a package once and it's the greasiest meat I've ever tried to pan fry.

When you try the same thing with my family's home-grown grass finished beef there is barely enough grease to wet a paper towel, yet the meat is still far tastier than that Harris Ranch stuff was. It was terrible.

    1. No. Sorta famous cattle ranch/restaurant about in the middle of the drive on I-5 from LA to San Francisco....Also has a simple little airstrip so you can fly in and get a steak lunch - overpriced and tough, imho....

  6. Went on vacation recently...Central Texas to Southwest Colorado.
    800ish miles one way.
Saw a total of one (actually zero) ev chargers the whole trip. The one ev charger parking space had no charger. Guess they were waiting on the diesel generator to be installed
