Louisiana produces 90% of the United States crawfish. Most of the farmed crawfish comes from rice fields in one small area of Cajun country. There, the industry is fairly new. In the 1980s, rice farmers experimented with cultivating crawfish in their fields. And it paid off. Today, business is booming, clearing the way for the next generation of farmers like Madison McIntyre. But the industry is also unregulated and fast-moving, trapping producers in an endless fight to keep crawfish alive.

DeleteGood story.
ReplyDeleteCrawfish farming has changed drastically over the last 30 years, it was once a byproduct, 2nd income, of rice farming. Now it's an entire industry in itself..

One of my closest friend has a small crawfish farm. My son and I pulled out about 200 traps for him after he had surgery in August two years ago. No nifty boat like that. Hip boots and a Pirogue. Brutal.
ReplyDeleteGreat story, thanks Kenny
ReplyDeleteSo the industry is "unregulated"?
ReplyDeleteHow long before .gov comes in and puts an end to that?
That is NOT how we season our boil!
ReplyDeleteLost me at illegals, I mean visas.
ReplyDeleteLove me some crawfish. Got introduced to them when I lived on the NW Gulf coast of Florida in the late '80s. Suck the heads, eat the tails!

A heads up for my fellow crawfish lovers...if you are travelling I-20 around Shreevport/Bossier area. take the Louisianna Downs exit (hwy 80) and go east about a mile to CRAWFISH PALACE...you wont be disappointed. Beer n crawfish is a great way to spend an afternoon.
ReplyDeleteGreat story Lane, thanks for posting, Many of the comments on YouTube for this excellent video are made by our young communists and woke socialists. Their ignorance is hilarious. They don't know jack shit about anything but want to preach about how evil this man and his business are. The workers aren't paid enough, the crawfish feel pain, American workers are being displaced, the owner is a greedy capitalist. our government should regulate this horrific industry, and on and on. Bunch of losers, all of them. But there is some hope when we see hard, smart workers like Madison.
