Scalise wins GOP nomination for Speaker of the House

No. 2 House Republican Steve Scalise won the GOP nomination for speaker, paving the way for a floor vote to make the election official.

Republicans held a secret closed-door ballot Wednesday morning after days of drama and infighting.

Scalise, who is battling bone cancer, beat out House Judiciary Chairman and Trump ally Jim Jordan in a 113-99 vote.

  1. If someone has to be a speaker, let's hope Scalise wins this vote. Just know that Trump supports Jordan, and when did anyone chosen by Trump ever work out....prove me wrong.

    3. Enough with the arguing, especially if you're doing it just to be doing it.

    4. Yep, lets hope that the person who has cancer with a 55% survival rate gets nominated. At least this way if he turns out to be another flop, he'll only be in the position for ~5 years.

    5. "prove me wrong."

Or... alternatively, you could present evidence, or perhaps even an argument, in support of your assertion. I can think of a few, but that's *your* job, not mine.

      Same applies to anyone appea

  2. Which shows how much sway Trump has with actual elected Republicans.

You do realize that he needs the house and senate to work with him to legally get things done... Right.... If Trump would have cleaned out congress you would be one of the first to bitch about him overstepping his authority... Dumbass

      Like McCarthy, Romney?

    6. Romney and McCarthy aren't Republicans. They're RINOs. Different animal altogether.

  3. Steve is my house representative and I do like the guy, hopefully he takes a firm hand in handling the business of the house and doesn't feel the need to compromise with rinos...
As to Trump's influence, Trump took 70% of the vote here, he endorsed Steve and Steve won reelection with approximately 75% of the vote in his district so I would say any talk otherwise is bullshit..

  4. It's a bad faith, disingenuous argument to say that Trump failed to drain the swamp. It was a campaign promise, yes. He should have been more ruthless at firing people, yes. Would anyone like to point out where he filled it? Would anyone like to point out what authority is vested in the POTUS to 'drain the swamp'? Would anyone like to point out what past POTUS has held absolute control over the political machinery in Washington, without having the support of his own party members in the House and Senate? Does anyone count the never-ending campaign of subversive 'resistance' that he encountered from Democrats and a substantial number of Republicans, as a consideration? Does anyone remember John McCain's vitriol, or Mitch McConnell's, or Mitt Romney's? They are scared of Trump because he represents someone they cannot control. Being a Washington DC fixture is all about influence. What happens when you are unable to exert influence? We had 4 years of panic.

    1. Hear-hear, as they say across the pond. Or 'ditto', as we say here.

  5. I would have preferred Jordan.

  6. I bet you didn't think this was going to be such a hard topic to moderate, Wirecutter. When will people realize that the government is totally corrupt, and no single person is going to fix a damn thing? The last 3 presidents have had their first 2 years with both houses of congress in their parties control, and yet are we any better now than we were before Obama?
And while I have no love for our current president, I have to give him credit for a speech he gave to Jewish leaders, where he forcefully promised our support to Israel and he stood up and said that anti Semitism would not be tolerated her in America. I never knew he had it in him. He is still a failure as president, but sometimes just saying the right thing is helpful.

    1. It's not just the commenters, mostly it's blogger is giving me a hard time with the comments on this post and the meme dump. Content is missing from a bunch of them, others are showing up in html code, crap like that, and I can't figure it out. I'm at the point that I'm ready to shut off the comments on both of them, but people do have opinions to express. I do wish they'd do it civilly though because I can see it really blowing up given the subject matter and I'm not in the mood to referee fights.
It doesn't help that I've had a screaming headache most of the afternoon.

  8. I like Scalise, and wish him well, but bones are where your blood cells are created, and that's why bone cancer is so lethal: cancer cells created in the bones are transported by blood all over the body.

  9. I hope all you people kneeling to suck Scalise's dick realize he plans on continuing to fund the Ukraine bullshit.

  10. the best thing about this, is that a guy who wanted to be Speaker, got there by making promises. And when he broke the promises, he got sh!t canned (at least from the Speaker position).

For the record, I figured McCarthy to be a worm from the beginning (gee feels good patting myself on the back... . . . )
