NYC war on rats sees success using carbon monoxide

NEW YORK - If you can't beat them, smoke them.

Looks like the battle of rats is going well for some parts of New York City.

"This method seems to smoke them out, literally," said one local.

*****

That's fine, they've killed a few living outside in burrows, but what about the ones living in the walls of the buildings and inside the apartments themselves? Are they just going to tent the entire city and gas it?
And where are the Rat's Rights advocates on this?

  1. Tent and gas NYFC??????

Let's not dismiss this idea too hastily, now. If it works, we can do the District of Criminals next.

    1. +1 Let's not be to hasty in condemnation. Maybe tent and gas 5-10 major cities and get some good data first.

    1. Would it be in bad taste to start by tenting the areas bounded by an aerial wire in each of the borroughs, just to see if it was possible?

Probably get 6 million rats from the test, and a few decades bitching about it in schools...

  3. 10$ a tail, the city will be empty of rats in a month, hotdogs will be cheaper too.

    1. No, people will start rat farms.

    2. India tried that with Cobras. Smart villagers bred so many Cobras for the bounty that the government had to stop the payments.

Villagers then dumped their Cobras, leading to a larger problem than when the program began.

    3. Hang anyone running a rat farm and carry on.

  4. I've used dry ice (CO2) in burrows of ground squirrels when we had population explosions. Works well.

    1. My dad the science teacher liked calcium carbide and water to gas ground dwellers. This has the added bonus of using a spark to complete the process, lol.

  6. So there should be a whole lot fewer politicians in NYC if the rat killing is going well

  7. Starker here,
I don't understand the reason to use Carbon Monoxide (CO), when Carbon Dioxide (CO2) or Nitrogen would work by displacing the oxygen. Like B said dry ice works. It seems to me that they would be cheaper too. But, I don't think like a democrat.

    1. The rats will detect the Carbon Dioxide and move to fresh air. All mammals have a suffocation reaction, not due to insufficient oxygen but excess Carbon Dioxide in the blood. So if you replace the air with anything inert, other then CO2, mammals will suffocate without realizing it. As far as Nitrogen goes, it would work but is slightly more expensive.

  8. I'd be concerned about them decaying inside the walls.

  9. Gassing everyone in New York would not be a bad thing....

  10. B-b-but isn't CO2 that deadly Global Warming Gas?
Gonna need to see an Environmental Impact Statement on this.

  11. I wonder if the IDF is inspired. Rats, either 4 or 2 legged, will fall to the gas.

  14. I'd think that the risk of increasing CO levels in the city's air in general would mean this isn't viable at scale. I.E. Risk of poisoning passersby.

As for using CO2 or nitrogen, yes that'll displace the oxygen. But CO doesn't need to, so it's lethal at MUCH lower concentrations.

  15. *raises hand
I'd like to volunteer Baltimore as a test city for the "tent and gas" operation.

  17. What about the climate freaks. Releasing any gas with the word carbon in it will cause a melt down. Cats and dogs will be sleeping together.

  18. I've been wondering why they haven't been doing this in Gaza for the tunnels there.
