That set up was $1,700 in 1980. First thing I bought for myself after I bought my mom and dad new appliances and console tv to replace all the old crap my dad kept together while us kids were in school. I didn’t have a girlfriend so I could pull that off with cash. I made more money in 1980 working in the oilfield than both of my parents.
I can't be sure but that looks like a gerard turntable. I had one and it was about the best back in those days. I'd sure like to have that set up just as it is regardless of the pros or cons I'm reading.
Yeah, back when that equipment was The Shits, headphones had a cord that Would pull right the heck out at 2 AM while it's dialed up. Today's headphones are a marvel. In 73, my fellow Airmen were going to Radio Shack and putting together systems for seven hundred ish bucks that frikken rocked.
Mama says "That can had better have a coaster under it.".

ReplyDeleteStereo speakers parked side by side at floor level and *behind glass!*
ReplyDeleteSo? It's a display.
DeleteIf you mean a display on how to make your turntable skip a lot, then yes.
DeleteAt least my nintendo Duck Hunt game would work on that.
ReplyDeleteI lost a couple of hot girfriends because Nintindo Duck Hunting replaced my weed addiction in the 80s.
DeleteSpeakers need to be separated 7 feet for best stereo and for fucks sake, don't put them under the turntable
ReplyDeleteDaryl
Just like the speakers they put on my travel trailer, 3 feet apart. Freaking trailer is 37 feet long but they couldn't put them anywhere else.
DeleteI see no turntable in this photo
DeleteIt's on the shelf above the speakers.
DeleteWhat is the device sitting on top of the cabinet next to the receiver/tape deck?
ReplyDeleteLooks like one of those old Bang and Olufsen Beomaster contraptions.
DeleteThat's an Atari 7800.
DeleteI stand corrected.
DeleteIt's
ReplyDeleteA
Display.....
I was in West Texas, roughnecking, same time. It Was good money.. The first job I had was Hill in drilling.. Tired old iron..

ReplyDeleteNot to be pedantic, but it's "Garrard", and I don't think it's a turntable. It looks like an Atari game deck.
DeleteWhere do you see a turntable?
DeleteIt's right above the speakers behind glass.
DeleteMike is correct on both counts.
DeleteNow I'd probably throw my back out reaching for the cassettes.

'bout that time I did sumpfin similar except LaFayette provided the goods.
DeleteWe always suspended the turntable from the ceiling to eliminate the skipping when the bass hit...
ReplyDeleteJD
Speakers need to be in macrame hangers from the ceiling. And where's the Beta-max VCR?
ReplyDeleteAs accurate as this display is, it's the carpet that really adds the full touch of realism.
