Who didn't see this coming?

Mega-chains McDonald's and Chipotle have announced they will raise menu prices in California to pay for the minimum wage hikes recently signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom.

Certain fast-food workers in the Golden State will be paid at least $20 per hour next year under new regulations passed into law in September.

  1. What if we just don't eat at those places? I really hate Chipolte. I hate having to repreat my order over and over to some zoned out ADD riddled teenager who isn't even paying attention. And I've counted repeating my order up to 5 times at our local McD's on the rare occasions I get some breakfast there. On the other hand there is a locally owned Chinese food place that makes great food and I don't even have to order unless I want something different. They just bring my food.

    1. Chipotle. It’s spelled “chipotle” and pronounced “chip oat lay.” The spelling “chipolte” and the pronunciation “chip ol tay” are just plain wrong. Don’t be that guy.

  2. Per item prices will go up more than proportionally needed to cover wage increases. As prices rise, fewer customers will be buying (pesky economics). But labor cost are fairly fixed (excepting robotics adoption and some peak sales period staffing). So with fewer buyers, and semi-fixed costs rising because of the mandated wages, the per-item price will have to go up more than proportionally to cover the wages. Or they will shrink, cheapen, etc. their products as needed. (I don't blame them.)
I miss the late 70s and early 80s economy - but apparently they are coming back quickly. Lets hope that is all that happens.

  3. My grandson turned 16 last month so he became eligible to work part-time.. He started Monday working after school and weekends getting paid $16 an hour, not bad for a kid without a work history... Of course that's part of the food costs increase so...

  5. Wait for that "trickle down" effect. Fast food is at the bottom of the ladder, mandating $20/ hour there will lead to every other industry having to raise wages. You thought Bidenflation was bad...

  6. I read that it's estimated the wage increase will cost franchisees a minimum of a quarter of a million dollars a year.

  8. I haven't eaten in a "fast food" joint in years. I don't like the food. As close as I come to consuming fast food is a once a month visit to the local Chink take out

  13. It's not the expensive burgers and fries that worries my, so much as the non-monetary consequences to employees.

If fast food workers are paid more than they're worth, then you'll inevitably have MANY applicants for each position. And that means that you can abuse the every loving FUCK out of your employees, safe in the knowledge that another eager replacement is just a phone call away from starting tomorrow morning.

And that abuse will have safety consequences (hot fry oil is no joke) and a bad effect on the employees AND the abuse employers.

i.e. more evil and abuse in the world.

    1. Not to worry, the rising cost and shrinking customer base will drive them out of business quickly.

  14. Some vile corporations that support infanticide and pedophilic grooming are going to have to raise their prices and possibly go out of business (in California anyway)? Insert Jeremy Clarkson "Oh no! ... ... Anyway..." meme here.

  15. Interestingly, the number of McD employees is half what it was just six years ago. It seems those jobs are already disappearing. It's going to be quite the shock to a lot of people to discover that more money brings higher expectations, greater competition, and, sorry, no job for you.

  16. Let's also consider, that if fast food joints are going to be forced to pay big bucks for workers, a few things will happen. First, a better class of people will start applying. People with a degree of integrity and will care about their work ethics. Thus, fast food joints will higher these better employees, leaving the typical feet-dragging shithead out of the equation. On top of this, the food of the poor, fast food, will be more expensive, and the poor, who are poor because they don't give a shit, will not have a job that normally would be available to them. So, fewer jobs for lazy jerks, and higher prices for the food they eat.

    Yeah...they got what they deserved.

  19. Has anyone considered that, within a few years, there will be far fewer fast-food franchises in California? Any smart businessman will see the handwriting on the wall and divest of his business for something more profitable. I don't know of anyone who is willing to work harder for less money, not even the Socialists who elected Gavin Newsom...
