California most expensive state in U.S. to get a divorce

There’s no doubt that most people go into matrimony, holy or otherwise, with every intention of it lasting through “richer and poorer,” “sickness and health” and “’til death do we part.”

It’s also true that there’s an unlimited number of reasons, none of which there is time to discuss here, that drive a wedge between married partners and result in divorce.

*****

I know it cost me over $10,000 in attorney fees alone with my ex playing games, until the judge told her to quit being petty and settle or she was going to settle for her.
Then there was half the value of the house, half the vehicles, half my pension.....

  1. I'm in MN; and my divorce was amicable - she didn't want to stay any longer - I let her go. No kids, so we divied up the property as we saw fit. I kept the house I had owned before I met her, I kept my truck - she took her car. etc etc.

    1. Amicable is the controlling word.
In Indiana, the most expensive (in legal fees) divorce made four trips to the State Court of Appeals and two to the State Supreme Court before being done.

  2. Cost me $5,000 in 1998. I think I got ripped off. My ex was making my lawyer make many changes to the agreement. One day as I was waiting to see him his secretary told me the best thing that could happen to me was if she got hit by a truck. I didn't say anything. A year or so later guess what happened? Yep. -sammy

  3. Back 54 years ago when we were renting my ex was so anxious to marry her boyfriend who she met at a bowling alley my NJ divorce only cost $1,000 for an attorney and a few household goods.

  4. My ex was happy to be shut of me. I got saddled with some tax debt, but considered it reasonable; when she defaulted on the car loan and they came after me, I sent 'em a copy of the divorce papers along with a note that said, "Your problem, not mine." These days we are friends, thanks to both of us growing up a bit.

    1. Been divorced from the first wife about 25 years . I remain utterly indifferent to her which is, apparently, the worst thing you can be.

  5. Never let your spouse know that you have a pension. Hide as much money as possible from her. All women get very greedy when they decide that they don't love you anymore.

She got my van, her shit & divorce papers....didn't touch my retirement.

    She's been gone 13 years & I have 9 AR's.

She ain't done nuthin' with her life since. Glad she's gone!

  7. Do you know why divorce is so expensive? Because it's worth it.

  8. Thirty years ago but did mine without lawyers. She found a 'sugar daddy' and wanted out. Turned out he was all hat and no cattle. If memory serves it cost $200+. I kept the kids.

  10. Hit men are cheaper than lawyers. Generally more honorable as well.
