That surveillance program—authorized by Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA)—was created after 9/11 with the intention of tracking foreign spies and potential terrorists. But it has predictably morphed into a way for law enforcement agencies to get a warrantless peek at Americans' phone records, emails, and other electronic communications—the FBI ran more than 3.3 million queries through the Section 702 database in 2021, according to an annual transparency report.

Just to clear things up, even though I get a few articles from Reason.com which is a Libertarian site, I am NOT a member of the Libertarian party nor will I ever vote Libertarian again.
I have voted Libertarian years and years ago but threw that shit out of the window back before the 2016 election when the Presidential candidate, Gary Johnson, picked the former governor of Massachusetts, Bill Weld, as his running mate.
Seriously, the Libertarians are supposed to be gung-ho for our Civil Rights and Johnson picked the former governor of one of the most anti-gun States in the Union as his running mate? Are you fucking kidding me?
When all of this PA started, I expected that all the guns and tech that were being pointed outward would eventually be turned around to point inward. I've not been disappointed. Welcome to the muzzle end of your tax dollars.
ReplyDeleteDon't worry. That warrantless domestic spying program will only be used against sitting republican presidents or republicans that run for office.
ReplyDeleteDon't worry, they won't go after the average (non-Ten Percent) Joe.
Or were in DC on Jan6th
Delete...and so much for the new Speaker looking out for The People as he promised.
ReplyDeleteNew boss, same as the old boss.

Was anyone really thinking it would be different this time? What changed other than the name of the guilty?
DeleteGive up the smart devices and live your life like it's 1982...getting spied upon is an choice.

I'm a former Libertarian Party State Chair (New York), and I'll never have anything to do with them again.
ReplyDeleteWhen your government is not yours, these things happen.
ReplyDeleteThere is no showdown. There is no debate. This is becoming law as we speak.
ReplyDeleteAny potential showdown is/was pure theatrics.
It's only gotten this far, so far, because of Republican jersey wearing foreign agents in The Senate. Not predicting Republican jersey wearing foreign agents in The House will do betterer. But that's why we voat. And condemn softball time outs.
ReplyDeleteReason is a mixed bag. Consider their ongoing slobbering over Jared Polis.
ReplyDelete@Chutes. No, you really don't have that much choice. You can try going completely dark, but that's very difficult these days. Then consider the latest glasses from F0rkbork: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/13/technology/personaltech/meta-ray-ban-glasses.html
A while back, I rewatched the Snowden movie. Nothing has changed.

Reason used to be much, much better 20-25 years ago when Virginia Postrel ran the ship. When she left, it began to slide downwards. I only rarely check out their site now, usually when someone links to something there.
