U. Michigan Prof Thinks Asking Black Students to Write in Standard English is ‘Anti-Black Linguistic Racism’

Expecting black students to write standard English that their teachers understand is racist, according to a University of Michigan professor.

April Baker-Bell believes that “traditional approaches to language education do not account for the emotional harm or consequences these approaches have on Black students’ sense of self and identity,” according to an article in Equity in Teaching Academic Language.

  1. So their resumes will self-select themselves to the bit bucket, and U Mich joins the Ivy League in the "Never Interview" bin... Great job, Prof!

  3. If writing or even using the host nation's language is a problem then send them home, blacks aren't slaves anymore and they CAN go home.

    1. Based largely on opinions held by Nigerians I know, American Blacks are like Palestinians: even their own ilk don't want them to immigrate.

  4. So can we fire this prof for not teaching her students proper English? Or dump the entire admission office for admitting dumbasses to do collegiate level work? Or do we just let the reputational damage to UofM graduates run its course?

  8. I'm all for this, I use grammar in the cover letter as a way to prescreen applicants. This will make it easier to weed out the ones likely to cause issues. If you can't write a clear concise report your not worth hiring

  9. Most people cannot write using correct English grammar and, sadly, this includes many with journalism degrees writing for major outlets.

  11. I find it amazing that I work with people from a dozen other countries whose native language is not English who don't feel that learning to write English is racist, yet people who were born here find it too difficult.

    1. I spent 7 years in Germany as a child, then another 3 when I enlisted. Ninety percent of the older Germans spoke at least passable English, and a huge majority of the younger generations spoke better English than I did because it was required in their schools back then.

Point #2 - even though most Germans spoke English, I still put out an effort to learn German because I was in their country. What was funny was I'd meet somebody in a gasthaus and both of us would want to practice the other's language, so I'd be talking to him or her in German and they would speak English back to me.

    2. Yup, Ken, we vacationed in Norway in 2017 and did not encounter —any— natives who did NOT speak fluent English, which was embarrassing for us as we only knew a few Norwegian phrases. We were told English is taught there from grade school onward. Years ago, in Switzerland, it was the same story, with zero communication difficulties. And this “professor” at a major US university probably “axes” questions of her students as she “learns” them sum ebonics.

    3. From what I hear, English is how Scandinavian countries speak to each other. But Norway is a special case - after centuries of being ruled alternately from Stockholm and Copenhagen, they can't even agree on whether their national language is Norwegian mixed with Danish or Norwegian mixed with Swedish. So they learn English and can be understood nearly everywhere.

  13. Like I read yesterday, we used to teach Latin and Greek in high schools here in Ameria. Now we teach remedial English in Freshman level Colleges. What do you think that they are doing in other nations such as Japan and South Korea? Not letting their K-12 students slough off while partying with their peers, with no parental supervision.
While this so called professor is an idiot, I actually blame it on the United States educational system. If you noticed, after the school lockdowns, pushed by Randi Weingartner and her ilk with the teachers unions, a large number of parents did not send their kids back to the failing school system but instead chose to homeschool their students, with expected results, that being the kids did much better at home.
Until we as a nation wizen up and get rid of the Dept. of Education, which has caused nothing but a long slide to mediocrity, and allow local control of education by the parents who elect the school boards, America will continue to trail the better educated nations in nearly every category. That carries it's own burdens, both economically and militarily. You can damn well bet that China is pushing it's students to achieve at the highest level possible. To them it is a war and they will continue to battle no matter what, because that is one area that they know they can defeat us, hands down.

  17. i,m up in the air as whether to teach children cursive in school or not. they haven't done it in years. it would be a benefit to them, but on the other hand it could be a secrete code for the older more educated.
it would be security, like 3 speed column shift vehicles. i would like to see some hood rat trying to steal one of those. they might get it into first gear but they would never find second without crawling under it and untangling the gears. driving one of those is a lost art form unto its self.
