Highway One through Big Sur is lije that. In a year of economic depression I was glad to find work 90 miles to the north. A new resort was being built in Bug Sur.
Early Monday morning was a drive to the jobsite. Stayed in trailers during the week. Monday AM was before CalTrans got out to clear the road. Well before the highway was clogged with tourons or tourist buses.
Lots of small rocks on the roadbed. Many small boulders, from camp cooler size to VW engine size. Every now and then a boulder the size of a truck or larger. And its still coming down as you drive past.
A couple of other workers and me would race up the highway for the full 90 miles. In the dark, whatever the weather, having a grand time dodging rocks, and speeding ahead. My strategy was to hang behind the first truck. Where he swerved, I swerved.
Daaaamn!
