DENVER - A Delta pilot has filed a lawsuit against an elevator company after claiming a defunct moving walkway "swallowed" his foot and shoe at the Denver International Airport.
I went through that airport in July. Most of the moving walkways were out of service. The one that was running featured sudden jerks and stopped then started with no warning. It felt like walking ten miles through that damn airport.
40 some years ago I worked at a Penneys. As part of new hire training, the loss prevention officer showed told us how to handle the escalator eating somebody's shoe. He said it doesn't look possible, but it really happens, even on escalators in good condition, usually to kids wearing sneakers.
Nothing makes people more helpful than someone walking around with an untied shoelace. I speak from experience as I will generally not retie. Exception is escalators which will grab your shoelace and devour your shoe and foot.
As an elevator/escalator mechanic, I have some insight here. Pic in article shows a missing comb plate. That machine should have been shut off and barricaded. Pilot is very lucky he did ot have his foot ripped off. A moving walk is just a flat escalator, and I assure e eryone they are frippin meatgrinders! Never let children play around them. Never personally seen people parts in one, but I have seen the aftermath mess it makes. Tom762
Knew a girl once that .... well, I'd never would file a lawsuit on her.

Off topic, but one of my pet peeves from the link - "Mr. Gow was forced to spend monies, and will spend monies in the future . . ."
ReplyDeleteMonies? What the hell are 'monies?' Is he dealing in various currencies from around the world? Money is plural. Didn't you learn that in high school?
Sorry, rant over. I have too much free time on my hands today.
