Pioche, Nevada

A historical marker at Pioche sums up the history of the area: 

Silver ore was discovered in this range of mountains in 1864, but no important development took place until 1869 when mines were opened and the town of Pioche appeared. Pioche soon became the scene of a wild rush of prospectors and fortune seekers and gained a reputation in the 1870's for tough gunmen and bitter lawsuits. Over five million dollars in ore was taken out by 1872, and by 1900 Pioche was nearly a ghost town.

    Thanks for the post! Surprized to see our little "ghost town" on your blog. You have long-time readers like me even here in this remote corner of the world. Though we live but a few miles away, we have a second home there and visit the town at least once a week. Seen some of the photos and stories, but enjoyed the ones not seen before. Cheers! h

    Getting ready to go wander around Nevada soon. Going to Ely, I may as well go check out Pioche too.

      Check out Cathedral Gorge just south of town while you're there

      Check out Hamilton as well. If you have a 4x4 take the drive up to Treasure City.
