Death by firing squad in the American Civil War

Firing Squads in the American Civil War? The Union and the Confederacy bled each other white in the 1860’s at horrific battles such as: Antietam, Manassas, Bull Run, Gettysburg, Chancellorsville and so many more. It was a war of personalities and presidents. Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis, Robert Lee, Thomas Jackson, Ulysses S Grant, Sherman, Sheridan, Jeb Stewart and many more.

But as in all armies and in al ages, the problem of desertion and discipline was a real headache for the high commands. How could men be prevented from deserting the ranks and if caught how should they be punished?
Should they be hanged? Imprisoned? Or should they be shot by their comrades as they would in the world wars of the 20th century?
