The automaker says that the electronic latch mechanism used to open the gate of some 2020-2024 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra truck beds might short circuit if water gets into the tailgate. That means the gate could inadvertently open while the car is parked, leading unsecured property in the bed to fly out when unaware drivers hit the road.
More doodads = more shit to fail.
ReplyDeleteElectric tailgates???
DeleteRob, my 2019 has an electric latch. You can press a button on the dash, the fob or the tailgate to open it.
DeleteIt's 2024, so if we exclude those owners who only need pick ups who need to boost their egos and pretend they're macho ass kickers the recall could be cut down to about 2,000.
ReplyDeleteI never understood the point of an electric tailgate. My doors don’t open like that so why does the tailgate?
ReplyDeleteWTF! Road Princess crap! All the electronic crap is a waste of money for someone who actually USES a pickup! It breaks and thats all it good for. I need 4x4, standard transmission and heat for winter. Bench seating and loose the crappie ergonomic seats. Return the side vents too! When I am hauling live stock or hay or whatever all that other shit is just in the way. Rant over
ReplyDeleteI loves me my 76 F250 true 4x4. Same era GMC would do just fine as well.
ReplyDeleteHell I don't need an electronic tailgate. And for that matter I don't need electric windows or door latches. Those are so damn fun to fix and just add to the cost.
ReplyDeleteI'll stick with my 23 year old truck and 24 year old 4runner. But still run pretty good and reliable. And no payments. And easier to work on. But they don't want us working on our own shit nowadays.
I wonder what a new car would cost without all the BS including a backup screen, CVT transmission, and all the safety features. And drive by wire. And Union Workers making 150k a year with benefits. I could go on and on about this but I'll shut up now.
Toyota just announced a couple of models, not for sale in the US. One sells for about $11K and the other $23K. They won't sell in the US as long as the chicken feather tarif remains.
DeleteA new car without all the BS is called a unicorn. If you had a car like that, what would you bring to the dealership to service.
ReplyDeleteI wanna old truck that you have to roll the windows down manually and am fm radio NO HOOPLA NO COMPUTER CRAP AT ALL!
ReplyDeleteTalk to Toyota USA, these are available in Mexico.

If you look at recalled items, over 80% are due to a dumbf**k playing engineer and the company letting a piss poor design get into manufacturing and out the door.
ReplyDeleteThe electronic latch is fitted so you can press the button on the keyfob to lower the tailgate remotely. Pickups are no longer work trucks. 20 years ago one of my coworkers traded his Ford Aerostar for the first of many F150 crew cabs and I don't think he's ever put anything in the box.

My boss has a 10 year old 4x4 that he's never put into 4 wheel drive.
DeleteNot good. The front dif and bearings won't get lubricated. I've put my Tacoma in 4 wd on dry pavement (when I have to), as long as it's straight, and drive that way for a few miles every month or so to lubricate the front end.
DeleteHell yeah you bunch of tough sobs, let’s remove the AC and the heater/defroster while we’re at it. Get us a horse and tell everybody what THEY need. Genius!
ReplyDeleteRelax, nobody's wanting everything removed. Some of us just don't like all the options. Don't have a stroke.
DeleteOdd, I don't have that option on my '72 F250. LOL I also do not like how huge the modern vehicles, cars and trucks, have gotten. My full sized Ford is almost like a compact to the truck today.
ReplyDeleteThe simple stuff isn’t really offered anymore because Joe Customer isn’t going to buy it.
ReplyDeleteI’m not big on options (like other have said, more options = more things to break) but when it’s cold, I love my seat heater and remote start.
Gay Man’s Chevy.
ReplyDeleteOf all the shit Chevy turns electric……I’ve owned several 1980-2001 and that damn tailgate is always having problems even before the switch over. I fondly remember teaching my children how the mechanics of them work “if it won’t open, get some pliers if you can’t do it with your hands and pinch the two opposing wires together”
ReplyDeleteLove me a Chevy but dam y’all at least perfect the old before continuing the legacy of a weak point.

My GMC 2000 SLE club cab had a tailgate issue that had a recall many years ago. According to manufacturer, the gate cable would sometimes develop weakness and break if something heavy was laid across it.
ReplyDeleteYeah, electrical doodads eventually break. My mirror in same vehicle just last week had the thermometer / compass feature black out. No biggie, those features does not affect function of the truck. 221,000 miles and counting - I hope the truck lasts me the rest of my life.
I remember my Uncle's 1970 Ford stepside pick-up. Power nothing, bench seat, metal gun rack across the back window. The tailgate had chain (chains ? I dont' remember that) that were exposed to elements but worked just fine.
For the price I paid for my 2500 Ram Diesel in 2018 (hauls my RV to South Dakota) Im looking for a 65 Chevy stepside with a V8! I can actually work on the damn thing! The new trucks have all kinda issues.....ABS, the Diesel BS the government makes them put on is useless and expensive. I can down size and save money and aggravation.
ReplyDeleteElectric tailgates? WTF is this world coming to?
ReplyDeleteThis makes me think of my dad (RIP). He wouldn't even get power windows when he ordered a new truck because "It's just more shit to break."
I don't think you can buy manual windows any more.
Here's the guy to get in touch with: Mayberry Mini Trucks.
ReplyDeleteTony can order you in something nice and it won't be crazy expensive.
Maybe install turn signals and include an instruction card on how to activate them. Here in Central Arkansas, the $70K-$100K pickups (almost every one seems to have one) apparently don't have them, or the drivers are just too stooopid to use them.
ReplyDeleteThe new GM pickups get water in the tail lights and it shorts out the computer in the tail light , new light is $1,600 and has to be programmed by the stealership so it will work on your truck.
ReplyDeleteThe new F-150s get water in the tail lights and it shorts out the computer in the tail light, which shuts down all the computers in the truck, including the one that runs the engine.
The F'n tail lights get wet and the damn truck wont run.
thats genius design !
