Texas - Pornhub, one of the most visited pornography sites, announced they were disabling their website in the state of Texas following a recent ruling.
The site released a letter on Thursday mentioning Texas lawmakers are requiring the site to verify users' age before being able to access the website. They claimed the age verification measure is ineffective.
I remember when there was a push for a common sense solution. .xxx domain names. Would be so easy for parents to block access. Made too much sense I guess...
It still makes sense, and can still be done. A .xxx domain can save some kids from being sexualized too young. Except I think that's what tptb want to happen.
My first job was stocking the mags on the shelf. We had a weird assortment, lots of 'speciality' ones. The boss used to put the scrapped adult mags in the staff room for anyone to take. I was the only male employee, so other than the lesbian on night shift no one else wanted them. Unfortunately I also had to clean the vhs cases of the adult movies when returned as they often were sticky.
We still don't have a widespread generic, private and *effective* way of verifying anyone's age or any other important details on the 'net.
It's kind of too bad that porn industry is the one where this makes the news... associates the whole thing with porn, when we'd need this for lots of actually important things really.
They did the same in NC at the start of 2024, but there's plenty of other sites still banging out banging and more. How do I 'know? My grandmother keeps bitching about it.
This is the camels nose. If a state can require you to identify yourself for porn, we’re two months away from requiring you to identify yourself for political views. Or opinions of DEI or the 2nd amendment or anything.
It also tells the government that you watch porn, which is not any business of the government. It also puts your identity in the hands of yet another internet company that has no need to have it.
"We need to verify your I.D. and age before you can watch porn." ...but you can just go right over there to vote! It's not like you want to watch porn, or something...

Today's spoiled teens will never know the thrill of buying a porn mag at the store, when the cashier doesn't bother with checking your age.

And just like that, hundreds of thousands of Texas teen boys learned how to use a VPN. Heh.
ReplyDeleteEffective because teenagers in Texas have no idea how to connect via a VPN. /sarcasm off
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to type a response to this travesty, one-handed....
ReplyDeleteYou can't single-handedly touch-type? After how much experience?
