His family confirmed on Instagram that the Ramblin' Man performer passed away in his Osprey, Florida home surrounded by loved ones on Thursday.
'The legendary performer, songwriter, bandleader and family patriarch passed away earlier today,' the Betts family said. 'Dickey was larger than life, and his loss will be felt world-wide.'
We are moving into an era where we are going to be losing music icons like this left and right. The next 5 to 10 years are going to be awful in that respect.
ReplyDeleteDickie's "Ramblin' Man" was the first full lead I learned back in '74; had bought the songbook for the "Brothers and Sisters" album. What an awesome talent he was. RIP.
ReplyDeleteDamn, this sucks.......
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the great music you've provided over the years
Dwayne and Greg has your guitar tuned and ready for you..
Rest in Peace Dickey ....
JD.
Dang.
ReplyDeleteWell crap. I saw them many times but the best concert was in Gainesville in 82'. Guess I'll pull all the albums out & let the neighbors have a listen.
ReplyDeleteRIP, Richard. And thank you.
ReplyDeleteHis and their music always reminds me of a very good time in my life. I thank them all for that.
ReplyDeleteMe too! Fun times that I almost remember.

Not to knock the man or his accomplishments, but every time I see one of these announcements, I think to myself, "Damn, was he still alive?"
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah, given the age of television and the explosion of music from the 50s and 60s on, we are going start seeing these headlines all over, dozens at a time. At some point it'll all just glaze over.
Excellent Jam. Never heard it before. Thanks for the heads up.
ReplyDeleteLive in Gainesville, FL 1982. This is the best Allman video there is. Sound quality good and Rebel flags a flyin. Gonna pop me a beer and a bourbon and watch it again.

Deletehe had a great life. to live to 80 through those times was an achievement in its self.
ReplyDeleteRIP Dickey.
Probably be buried in Rose Hill Cemetary. Thats where Elizabet Reed, Duane, Greg and Barry are buried.
ReplyDeleteDaryl
The first real concert I saw was the Allman Brothers at the Orlando Sports Stadium in 1970-71. This was the music of my life. RIP Dickey
ReplyDeleteI lived in Altamonte Springs then and saw many a concert in the Tin House - Bob Seger System, Steve Miller Band, Santana, Iron Butterfly, etc. Good times.
DeleteSaw them in the old Jacksonville Coliseum in 1971, April I believe. Another Jax band, Cowboy, opened up.
