My daughter used to do this at that age. She'd disappear and we'd find her sound asleep in the hall closet, curled up in the dirty clothes basket. Later figured out that it was her way of telling us she was too big for a crib. Got her a big girl bed and it never happened again.
When you are told, They cannot sleep on your bed! That young fella is living in the solution not the problem.
