Fix a New Gas Can in 4 Simple Steps

Don't throw away your gas can! I'll show you how to fix a NEW EPA gas can so it actually works. We will be working on a yellow diesel can but the process is identical for the red gas can. These cans are made by Midwest Can but the nozzle design can be found across many other brands as well. These newly designed fuel cans have environmental and safety modification that make them almost useless and also make spillage a lot more common which is neither safe or good for the environment. If I can do it so can you. Let's get started.

  1. I just tossed one of the new cans. They had a hazardous waste disposal day at the recycle center. Bought one of those idiot cans, emptied my Jerry can into it, and dropped the idiot can off. Those Jerry cans are awesome.

  2. I have a spout from a bunch of years ago and I just swap it to the new can......

  4. All my cans, four five gal, were fixed a long time ago. It's nice to not spill gas all over the place. Those saftey nozzles are shit. I'd spill gas everywhere when I used them.

  5. It takes the government to create a new gas and cause more gas spills then they are 'trying' to prevent. I HATE THOSE NEW CANS, still have my old one.

  6. Am surprised some EPA apparatchiki hasn't yet come after him.

  7. I bought a bunch of nozzles for my cans that have just a straight tube that fit new the cans. But hacking the new ones is a good lesson!

  8. I ordered the vents for my gas cans a couple of days ago from Amazon. I bought the first new can with the idiotic spout on it this spring. The first time I tried to use it I spilled more gas than I have in probably my entire life with the old type of cans.
Leave it to the government to fix something that isn't broke. Assholes.

  9. I tried these and they work really well:

A bit pricey but the kit does three cans.
    Solid construction - zero hassles.
If you go to their Amazon storefront, they have a lot of other products too.

    1. I've got them on all my cans and every single one of them leaks after 4-5 fills.

    2. My problem with them is that the garage mice like the taste. ?
Seriously, the damn mice nibbled the plastic vent cap all the way through.

  10. I’ve not had any luck with the retro fits either. Have to try this as it looks like it will solve the issue for those cans

  11. Local NAPA store has replacement spigot and vent package for about $15. “For non-fuel use only”. Can be set up for long or short reach. I like the long reach extension for getting to the behind-the-license-plate fuel filler on my antique Olds.

  12. Holy carp. I didn't know that was possible. It's so beautiful.

"Improvise. Adapt. Overcome" in very deed.

And yeah, another example of the damned greenies causing of the problems they're purporting to solve.

  13. I bought some authentic Wavian NATO cans just after moving to TN. They cost about $90 each now (with an included low flow spout), which is a long term bargain because I don't have to buy replacements every couple of years. There is a flexible, long, high flow spout that is excellent and can empty a can in under a minute. I have cans for diesel and cans for gas, with a separate flex nozzle for each fuel type.

You might find other suppliers. Avoid the Chinese knock-offs because the seams are not fully recessed and have been reported to leak. The only issue I have had is that some of the gaskets are starting to degrade a tad after 12 years, but replacements are available and I am likely to buy some soon. I know these are expensive, but they really last and are easy to handle, even at my age.

I use one of these carting gas for my chain saw: https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/no-spill-gas-can-125-gal-1074135?store=546&cid=Shopping-Google-Local_Feed&utm_medium=Google&utm_source=Shopping&utm_campaign=&utm_content=Local_Feed&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw9cCyBhBzEiwAJTUWNctOSEOfoAY4iV7oVJg7F_Cc68Fzj1iv7Ng0Zc-ItaYrkjWsLz0vYRoCDu8QAvD_BwE

    1. Those cans are just as finicky and as much of a PITA as any of the new fangled designs. I have two and I hate them.the button does not make operation simple nor easy. Admittedly, I have the 5 gallon ones.

  14. After watching the video, we ordered a package of vent caps.

Thanks for tip. Saves me from buying gerry cans or some insanely priced fueling system from the tractor supply store, just to fill my mower.

  15. A fellow down the street had a moving sale. He had 6 or so old gas cans. He told me they were the first things sold.

  16. Can’t you paint a standard plastic water jerry can red and use it for portable gas can?

  17. I use a transfer pump like this amazon.com/TERA-PUMP-Multi-Purpose-Battery-Transfer/dp/B07PKS1LQF and replace the stupid spouts with caps
    amazon.com/dp/B0CMK5YW63.

This works especially well when refueling my tractor since the fuel fill is so high up.

  19. In a world of shitty products, the MidWest Can is the largest turd.
I end up removing the spout and pouring the gas right into the mower. Some spillage always occurs.

  20. Rip the shit out of the nozzle and drill a vent hole. sheet metal screw in the new vent and a piece of baggie to seal the spout. Of course you have to unscrew things to use it.
