I worked for the U of Pennsylvania Med School. End of semester, students would do the equivalent of taking their inconvenient pets to 'live on a farm' - they would just leave, and set the dog or cat loose in West Philadelphia. I found a cat that had obviously been abandoned. I took it to my office, got it some food and litter from the pet store down the street. Within an hour, every woman in the department was in my office oohing and ahhing over the cat. I wish I'd known about that when I was in college.
