This is one case where I don't think that the blame necessarily lies with the UK healthcare system. A problem not being diagnosed properly at first can happen anywhere. It is certainly true that the UK healthcare system is seriously flawed and the hard of thinking always blame the problems on underfunding. It is in fact lavishly funded, the problems come from the fact that it is run by the state. It is easy to see the attraction of state run healthcare when people are faced with medical bills and disputes with their insurance provider, it just doesn't work that well in practice. In the UK, people who can afford to go to a private hospital if they want their operation done in a timely fashion. This effectively means that you pay twice.
I have an older brother, who when he was younger, stuffed a dried bean up his nose. Massive nasal infection followed and it continued for months, snot, blood, pain. The doc finally noticed the bean had sprouted and was beginning to work it's way towards light and removed it.

One of my younger brothers did the same. When the doctor pulled it out, there was 3" root growing out of the bean.
