Gotta use a jack stand, people

Police say an 18-year-old man found stuck under a car in a Vermont high school parking lot was working on his car when the jack collapsed.

I don't care if I'm just changing a tire, I use a jack stand.

  1. I'll often slide the spare under the side I have jacked up and swap it out for the flat so that the car will fall on the rim if I don't have Jack stands handy.

    1. Why wouldn't you ever have a jack stand handy? I've always carried one in my vehicles.

    2. You carry jack stands *in your car*? Damn. I've got a couple in the bed of my truck, but my car...trunk space is low as it is. Never considered it.

    3. Yup. I've only owned one car in my life, the rest were trucks, but my wives cars had a jack stand in the trunk.

    4. Phil: With all the junk in your garage, how do you not have a dozen or so of those things laying around?

  2. Best investment I have made. So much quicker and easier than sliding and stacking bricks.

  3. A nice solid round of southern live oak works well. Maybe I'm a weakling, but I stopped trying to split them for firewood and use the large ones to hold outdoor plant tables and prop up heavy things.

  4. I hope some fellow high school moron didn't 'accidentally' rock the vehicle while he was under it

  5. Okay. It's official. As of Monday, you can honestly say "Hey, I didn't live to be 65 years old by doing stupid shit".

Says the 73-year-old guy that worked his whole life in the woods and still has all his fingers and toes. It's one of the achievements I'm most proud of in my life.

    1. That is great, Elmo. My grandfather was a logger his whole life and never got seriously injured himself. His advice was to respect the saw, but not be afraid of it. Both would get you hurt, or killed.
Unfortunately, I do know of a few people that didn't make it out of the woods alive. Not sure whether it was complacency, or just sheer bad luck, that killed them.

    2. Used to haul sawdust to a biomass plant.
Where we loaded was next to an old time shingle mill.
Two French dudes would hold the 20" block of cedar with one hand, feeding it to the saw and at the same time grab the shingle as it came off the saw with the other hand and use another saw to "butt" it.
      Scary shit.
The older of the guys only had 4 fingers left.
The younger only had lost two.

  6. I gotta admit I never thought about carrying a jack stand in the truck. I had to change out a flat recently and that would have been a very good idea. Going to go stow one behind the seat with the other gear. They don't do much good in the garage when you're out in the boonies. I will say that having a cordless impact wrench on board with the right socket for the lug nuts was very handy.

  7. I have seen "name brand" Jack stands splay out, I carry and use couple 6x6 blocks and crib under frame or better axle. failing that spare(full size) goes under car first then flat as work progresses.

  8. I have a pair of jack stands, but use them only at home, not carry in trunk. I'm worried enough that my tools might get *misplaced* at a mechanics shop because I rarely remove my tools even when taking them in to be serviced. (With my memory, I'm afraid I will forget to toad them back up after getting the truck back).

Phil's trick about placing spare under makes sense - thanks for giving me that tip !

  9. Beside using jack stands or blocks I also place wheel chocks on the tires.

  10. Jacks don't kill people... Jackasses kill people.

  11. Damn, that just blows. Very sad...

Hell, I use stands on my Exmark zero turn when I remove blades for sharpening. Even with a Bulldog jack.

    1. I pick up my zero's with the front end loader when pulling blades. Still I put a jack stand under them.
