Federal investigators confirmed Tuesday that a hot railcar wheel bearing sparked a fire and caused the massive derailment of a Norfolk Southern train carrying tank cars with hazardous materials in East Palestine, Ohio, in 2023. Investigators said a series of missteps, faulty track sensors and delayed communications about the train's toxic cargo from the railroad company contributed to the disaster.

ReplyDeleteNoooo, setting fire to the rail cars is what contributed to the disaster, the wheel bearing failure was the disaster!! Trying to use word vomit to deflect blame is called "cover up". Geez! Doesn't anyone in government go to school anymore?
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm less that 13 miles away, as the crow flies. Could smell the chemicals for a couple days. Headaches for a week or so. Not fun.
ReplyDeleteThe bearings on modern rail cars are sealed roller bearings so no maintenance is theoretically required. But, there are still cars out there with greased journal bearings, and it is important to ensure that the grease reservoir is topped off after each trip. My guess is that someone didn’t do that and as a result a “hotbox” ensued.
ReplyDeleteIt's why good railroads, like the Florida East Coast, have bearing monitors about every 10 miles or so set to sense hot bearings (yes, even the sealed ones can fail.)
