The drinks world has been rocked by dramatic media stories about barren patches of California countryside, abandoned vineyards, and scores of wineries closing their doors. Photos show tens of thousands of vineyard acres being bulldozed and then pulverized into wood chips by large industrialized grinders across the Golden State.
This "Grape Apocalypse" (Grape-pocalypse?) is being framed as the sad but inevitable result of declining consumer interest in wine. That's true, but it's not the full picture.

DeleteI won't argue that govt regs don't unintentionally or intentionally screw up commerce. But the writer sees failure in the wine grape industry and ignores the larger causes in his rush to blame govt.

DeleteWe build upscale houses, many on old farms where the original farmhouse and outbuildings are demolished in favor of a new McMansion. One product of this is that local rich folk try to keep the agricultural zoning for a property tax break and the most civilized thing to grow is wine grapes. What I see is many "hobby" vineyards springing up in circumstances like that and I doubt they really sell much wine or make any profit. I'd bet California is very similar.

Nah... everybody got tired of California. Wine is flourishing here in Oregon. Hope we figure out how to fix the state as it is slowly being transformed into communism here too. Obviously can't vote our way out of it, our elections have been fixed for years and years. Mail in voting really sucks. Wish we could just make Portland it's own state, the rest would work out.

ReplyDeleteBorn and raised in Napa. We used to have to stop the car so quail could cross Silverado Trail, 200,000- 500,000 quail at a time. That was back in1958. There were only a couple of dozen wineries then. Now, they planted grapes everywhere.....plus the democrats ruined California.
