#9. My dad's father's parents died in a cholera outbreak in New Orleans. All the kids went to orphanages. The oldest daughter aged out, got a job, legally adopted (for purposes of getting him out of the orphanage system) the next youngest, both worked, made enough that she could legally adopt the third child, and continued until all 6 younger-than-her were out of the system.
So, yes, there are legal reasons for an 18yo to 'adopt' a 17yo.
Imagine that--the "old" system actually determined if a person earned enough money to support a child before being allowed to adopt--how logical and practical. And, kudos to the young lady (your great-aunt?) who worked in order to get her siblings out of the orphanage--shows a lot of determination and love.
Yep. They did it right back in the days. Funny how the system worked well when Social Work wasn't a college degree program for dumb females that couldn't even get an edumacation degree.
