Judge: "Okay, bye! Have fun and remember to wear sunscreen!"
The woman stole a Chicago cop’s patrol car and then struck the officer with the vehicle, found not guilty by reason of insanity, will receive outpatient mental health treatment. In addition to handing down that decision during a recent court hearing, Judge Tyria Walton issued an order allowing the woman to leave town on vacation.

Must have been a recipient of white privilege. No, wait! The only white person in the story was the cop that was almost killed. The perp was rewarded with the job of Lead Accountant in the city department of Family services (or some such agency). Well deserved, no doubt.

It helps to be insane if you're Lead Accountant in a Chicago city department. In fact, it's probably mandatory.

Heinlein had us surviving the Crazy Years.... that's hard to see today but I have hope.
ReplyDeleteNGRI defenses are incredibly rare. I ran a forensic program a long time ago and while I have performed of such examinations, literally only a handful actually met criteria. Not enough info on the report to know if it was valid or not, but the norm in most states is for mandatory inpatient evaluation & treatment after such a verdict. Vacation? Not until she had at least 6 months of stable outpatient care & full compliance with treatment.
ReplyDeleteI did have one very funny case once, a guy wrote a check on a Saturday to buy TWO new cars at a lot. Surprise surprise, check bounced on Monday! Guy was upset as he wanted the cars, and he had a million dollars a year put in his account by a corporation because he found them processing cocaine!
Judge asked my opinion if he was dangerous (which necessitates impatient care). I answered "Only with a own & a checkbook.". Prosecutor & car dealer were not pleased, but come on, guys... the fellow wss delusional & they were greedy.
