The Gun Debate - 1960s Report Compares New York Cops and British Bobbies (1966)

On 28 September 1966, ITN's Peter Woods observed officers in the New York Police Department (NYPD) undergoing firearms training, as part of an investigation into the difference between British and American policing. In general, officers in the United States were baffled by the fact that British "bobbies" patrolled the streets unarmed. In New York, it was assumed that most members of the public would be armed in any interaction with law enforcement, however routine. Therefore all officers, male and female, were required to carry their firearms at all times – even when off duty.

The shooting stance of those women, though......

  1. The women have no eye protection, but I did notice the lady shot close to the guy's balls...I grew up a mile from NYC, in that era, and couldn't imagine a cop not carrying a gun...shortly after this video, when the bad guys out gunned the good guys, the .38 cal revolver went the way of the 9mm pistol...

    1. She misunderstood "Crouch" for "Crotch".

  3. Agree about the shooting stances. I guess the Weaver stance hadn't made its way from California to New York yet.

  4. It was called the "combat crouch" and the idea was that it supposedly reduced the target area presented to the bad guy. Dumb.

    1. The opening sequence of Paul Harrell's videos made a fine mockery of that stance.

  5. Paul Harrell used to open his videos with him shooting from the combat crouch.
I think it may have been slightly tongue-in-cheek, though.

  6. Maybe it's about, as circumstances require!
